Cows Create Careers Project
During term two the year 5/6 class along with the year 7 class competed in a program called ‘Cows Create Careers’. For this program the students worked alongside the year 5/6 class from St Malachy’s in rearing two Holstein Friesian calves, Orbit and Bob.
To raise Orbit and Bob the students had to work together in groups to mix the milk, feed the calves, give them fresh water and clean their pen. This was a tiring job but the students loved every part of it and in particular enjoyed the funny antics of the calves as they tried to do their jobs.
As part of the course the students had to complete 2 projects, these projects were based on their year level and were designed to extend their knowledge. It involved a hands on project and a written project, these projects were completed as a team and each student had a job to do.
The year 5/6 class completed the following projects:
- A 3D model based on animal behaviour, and
- An email to the Dairy Industry Australia explaining the project and their new understanding of the industry.
The year 7 class completed the following projects:
- A 3D model based on the Dairy Industry, and
- A scientific report based on their learning and understanding of calf rearing. This included data, measurements and information they researched.
I am delighted with all the students as they worked hard in their groups and should be proud of their work and achievements. The next step is to submit their work to the Project Coordinators so it can be assessed, and hopefully be in the running to win some very cool prizes for themselves as well as the school.
I’ll let you know when the results are in. Good Luck Edenhope College!!!!
