CaSSSA Athletics

On 19 August, Mount Alvernia College sent 92 girls into battle at QSAC Stadium for the annual CaSSSA Athletics Carnival.   This team was the largest we have selected in many years, and had some great talent in both track and field events.

The day was a super tough one, both for the three leading schools (All Hallows', St Rita's, and Mount St Michael's), who were locked for points all day in first to third, but the remaining four schools (Loreto, Mt A, Brigidine, and Lourdes Hill) were also so close the whole day.  It was the closest finish in the many years for the carnival, with just 22 points separating first and third, and 39 points separating fourth and seventh place.

While we celebrated at times of the day in fourth place, the relays were the downfall for our team this year, slipping us back to seventh by the smallest of margins.

We had some great success on the field this year, narrowly missing the podium by ten points to All Hallows'.  We also took some records on the day as below.

  • U14 Javelin – Jemma Keefe 36.37m (record was set in 1989)
  • U14 Discus – Jemma Keefe 39.58m (record was set in 1996)

Age Group Results:

  • U13 Giselle Shaw 3rd place, Trinity Woodward 5th place.
  • U14 Jemma Keefe 1st place.
  • U15 Breanne Shepherd 2nd place.
  • U16 Orlaigh Greene 4th place.
  • U17 Carla Galvin 4th place.

Well done to the entire team on a job well done and, with such a small gap to fourth, rest assured we will be faster, higher, and stronger in 2020.
