Sports Report
A busy start to Term 4 in sport with the rowing, tennis, cricket and netball seasons in full swing while the basketball finals have begun for the seniors and juniors begin next week. Good luck to all of the teams involved.
Our shooters had some great results at Minyip two weeks ago and the opportunities for students to compete in Glenelg Division Golf and Tennis are upon us. On Monday, a group of four Year 7 and 8 boys competed in the golf event and, despite not winning, enjoyed the opportunity to compete at the Heywood Golf Course in this 9 hole event. Best score for the team went to Edward Beggs. Other team members were Dougal Doery, Riggs Layley and Sam Kelly.
GD Tennis tryouts are currently happening and the team will compete at the Hamilton Lawn Tennis Club on Friday 10th November. Yesterday was the big event for Dr Hirst and Mr Smith as our Middle Years’ rugby 7’s teams put their training into practice against Monivae College teams! We look forward to hearing about how they fared.
I would like to take the opportunity to advise all students and parents that “College caps” are available at the uniform shop for $10 and can be worn by the students when competing at a college sporting event and or in PE lessons. These do not replace the normal wide brim school hat policy at other times.

Under 14 Cricket: Round 4
In the first game and day of the two-day format, College won the toss against Hamilton and elected to bat. Openers Oli Wortley and Charlie Johnston started cautiously, but kept the runs ticking over. Johnston played some impressive cover drives on his way to a chanceless twenty-eight runs before he and Wortley (34 runs) retired to give their team mates a turn to bat. At none for sixty-eight College was in a solid position. Dougal Doery and Edward Beggs were the next two at the crease. Both were striking the ball well early and the signs looked ominous, until Doery lost sight of a ball and walked across his stumps to be adjudged leg before. Beggs was cruelly found to be centimetres short of his crease trying to take a quick single. It was left to Eliza Jagger and Campbell Craig to ‘settle the ship’, which they did putting on a steady fifteen run partnership before they were both dismissed when the score reached one hundred runs. Jagger hit three cracking fours on her way to fifteen runs and with a bit more time in the middle, she should be able to score her first fifty in this grade before the season is over. Dougal Mann set about playing himself in, allowing any balls outside the off stump to go through to the keeper. His patience was rewarded when he pounced on two balls going down leg and smashed them to the boundary. One shot almost made it over the boundary on the full, such was his timing. A third attempt unfortunately saw Dougal get a top edge and the catch was easily taken behind the stumps. Jack Wortley supported Dougal before retiring to give the last three batters a well needed hit. Henry Bensch, sensing the urgency to make quick runs as the overs ran down, used controlled aggression to hit thirteen valuable runs. Finn McLindin batted for five overs and did his best to support Henry, before he was caught for one. Riggs Layley was the final batter and with five overs to go was given a licence to thrill the crowd with some hitting. He did his best and struck some solid blows, but the Hamilton fielders were doing a great job in ensuring that the runs did not get away from them. At the end of the allocated forty-eight overs, College had reached a score of one hundred and thirty-seven for six wickets. This is a defendable score, but the College bowlers will need to be at their best to make this a winning score. Everything is set for an exciting finish next week.

Rowing Report
Last Saturday the Hamilton and Alexandra College Rowing Club was very well represented at the South West Games on Lake Hamilton. Seven singles, seven doubles, ten quads and four eights rowed the course to represent College. Each crew put on an outstanding performance and maintained their strength throughout the day. Four wins were tallied at the end of the day. The First Girls’, consisting of Claudia Roberts, Nyah Bester, Amy Boland and Maddy Rowe, coxed by Gracie Austin, came away with a win after a very close final race against the Second Girls’. The First Girls’ also rowed with the First Boy’, James Sutherland, Harry Beal, Lachy Oliver and Lachy James, in a mixed eight coxed by Gracie Austin. The crew came away with the win in a tight, but powerful race. The last race of the day was between the two female eight crews. The Second and Third Girls’, consisting of Kate Millear, Anna Kelly, Adele O’Brien, Louise Millear, Ayleish Beaty, Emily Crawford, Billie Smitheram and Maddi Mutch, coxed by Niamh Sutherland, came out on top after the closest race of the day. Congratulations to all crews and a big thank you to all the parents and families that came down for the day and provided ongoing support, food and sunscreen for the first regatta of the 2017/2018 season! A second massive thank you goes to Mr Budenberg for organizing the very successful day. This weekend coming up will be our second chance at glory. The Hamilton and Nestles Regattas will be on both Saturday and Sunday and held at Lake Hamilton. Come down and support the rowers!
