Catch the Buzz

I would like to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to the Myrniong Staff who hosted a range of engaging and stimulating sessions for the Prep to Year Four students on Tuesday morning.  Joined by visiting students from Woodford Primary School, and in mixed age groups, children took part in three of eight sessions.

Mrs Nettleton ensured the Art Room was a hive of excitement with flying eggs, trickling water, blue food dye and lots of cheering.

Mrs Milich had recreated a Day Spa with calming sensory experiences, where the children were reflective and focused.

The Library was a mass of hands-on activities as Mrs Zuo led a Cultural Connections session with fans, paper cutting and character painting.

Mrs Kelly’s space was akin to an engineers’ convention!  Great collaborative design was underway as children built and enhanced air powered cars.

Meanwhile in the Music room, a group of children happily strummed away on ukuleles and jammed together.

Miss Ross’ Poetry with Pizzazz was the dramatic hub, where children were able to watch their performances using instant iPad playback.

In Mrs Mackarness’ room, children were busily coding computer turtles to produce online art designs. They were also manipulating the codes to see what would happen.

Ms Brabham had set up a design space where children were creatively using craft materials to protect eggs when they were crash tested! The children obviously saw no limits to the resources provided and the majority of eggs survived their crash tests.

Next Friday (3rd June) - No Classes

A reminder to all families (Piccino to Year 5) that next Friday, 3rd June, is a Reporting Day for staff and, therefore, there are no classes for the day.

Dress Up Fundraiser Day Tomorrow

The Red Cross Youth Group apologises for missing the Newsletter deadline for last week.  They would like to advise you that tomorrow, 27th of May, they are hosting an RSPCA fundraiser.  Children are encouraged to wear casual clothes with a pet accessory.  Dress ups include things like animal prints, dog tails, headband ears, paper collars.  (Please note that real collars are not suitable as they may be dangerous).  Please remember to send in a gold coin donation to help the RSPCA look after their animals if your child is participating.

AFC Clinic - Year 4 & 5 Monday 6th June

Each year, our Regional AFL representative, Mr Jock Whiting, organises an AFL football clinic for Year 4 to 6 students at local schools.  This year they will be enjoying kick to kick and hand passing to Carlton FC members.  Year 4 & 5 students are able to wear their sports uniform to school on this day.  They have the option of also bringing along a football jumper and boots to be worn at the clinic.  It should be a terrific session.  As an avid Carlton supporter, Miss Ross is disappointed that the Year 2s won’t be joining them!

Prep to Year 2 Swimming & Lunches Next Week

Next week the Prep to Year 2 students will participate in a Swimming Intensive course from Monday to Thursday.  As these sessions run partly through our normal lunchtime, students will be having an early lunch on these days.  Therefore, we request no lunch orders on these days.  Children can wear their sports gear to school over their bathers for the week.

Year 3 Online Collaboration with Caulfield Grammar-Wheelers Hill

Thank you to Mrs Elisha Nettleton and Mrs Helen Mackarness who have facilitated an online collaboration between our Year 3 students and the Year 3s at Caulfield Grammar School.  The students have been collecting and sharing data about what it is like to live and go to school in Hamilton and Wheeler’s Hill.  This week their project culminated in a face time session where they had the opportunity to meet each other.

Mud  Glorious Mud!

On a positive note, all the mud around Myrniong hopefully reflects improving conditions for our local farms.  On the downside we are battling a constant trail of mud after recesses and lunchtimes – not to mention the state of shirts, trousers and shoes going home.  Mrs Povey did point out to me that a dirty uniform at least signals to parents that their children had fun playing and weren’t inside on detention!

It is important that the children are able to make the most of active play times, so we would like to try the following strategies for ‘mud minimisation’:

  • Children are encouraged to pull on an old footy jumper at break times
  • Gumboots for younger children are welcome to be brought to school and left on the shoe racks (these need to be named)
  • Children playing ball games should bring along a hand towel, face washer or packet of wet wipes so they wipe mud off their legs (the bathrooms are currently becoming mud pits as they are trying to use wet paper towelling)
  • Old runners are required for playing on the oval (mud in soles of good runners leaves a mess in Sport Centres and is slippery and dangerous).

Making Music at the Hamilton Eisteddfod

This term our Prep to Year Two students and Chamber Singers have been working on items to present at the Hamilton Eisteddfod.

The Hamilton Eisteddfod programme has now been distributed and we can advise families of the following performance dates.  Please note that we are unable to give exact performance times, as the schedule is set by the committee and, on the day, has to cater for items that withdraw due to illness etc.

  • Thursday, 9th June 9:30am onwards: Chamber Singers, & Prep to Year 2 Singers
  • Thursday, 9th June 1:30pm onwards:  Year 5 Class instrumental item and  Pizzicato Strings performances

Science ICAS Competition Year 2-5 Tuesday, 31st May

Next Tuesday, all students from Years 2 to 5 will sit the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Science paper. The ICAS Science paper, serves as a competition as well as a progress tracking tool, which assesses students’ skills in the key scientific areas of interpreting data, applying data, predicting and concluding as well as the higher order skills of investigating, reasoning and problem solving.  The papers contain 30 – 40 multiple choice items and run for 45-55 minutes.  It is a great opportunity for our younger children to develop skills around test taking and the teachers use the feedback in their planning for individuals and classes.

Club Kidpreneur - Can you help us?

As part of our Year Four Club Kidpreneur business, we are looking for glass jars of different sizes and shapes.  They can have a lid or no lid.  We will be using jars to make a product that we will be selling to raise money for charity.  If you have any jars you can donate to us, would you please leave them in the Year 4 classroom or at the Myrniong office.  Thank you for your help.

Junior Art

We can all take a deep breath now... the Parents and Friends Art Auction has been and gone! The event was a resounding success with lots of funds raised for the Junior Campus Undercover Area. I would like to give a big thanks to all of the students and staff at the Junior Campus who contributed. I had a chance to sneak into the venue on Friday afternoon and got a couple of surprises when I saw some individual art work from Junior Campus students in addition to the class pieces that were contributed, which made me very proud.

We are still carrying on with our artist inspired works with Monet, Escher and famous Stained Glass pieces featuring for some of the classes this week. We also threw in a hint of dragon drawing just for fun! As always, check out the blog (juniorarthamiltoncollege.weebly.com) to see what the children are creating and having a look may also explain why your children have come home with paint in their hair!
