Competitions for Middle Years Students:
A number of students in Years 5 to 8 have read the Middle School series by James Patterson. The publishers are running a competition for budding authors, see their website here. At the same time, Dymocks Bookshop in conjunction with the publisher is running a competition for young filmmakers to create a book trailer video for Tristan Bancks book My Life and Other Exploding Chickens. The details for this one are here.
Year 5:
Not in the blog yet but on the way, are the imaginings of our Library lesson around the beautiful book: Imagine a Place. The images should be available for viewing here by the end of Thursday!

Junior Library
Well, "Catch The Buzz" day was very busy for us as we kicked it off with some awesome activities at the Junior Campus and then rounded up the Year 3 class and took them to Senior Campus for the culmination of our collaborative project with Caulfield Grammar School. We worked on a shared presentation over 4 weeks during which each class added information about living in a rural or suburban setting. After the written information was exchanged, we then set up a Google Hangout where the children could see and speak to each other. The introduced themselves and asked a series of questions about where the other class lives and how they live. We told them about cattle, sheep, crops, water-tanks and long bus rides and they explained massive shopping centres, ethnic diversity, quick rides to school and a never ending supply of water! Children learn best from their peers and it is always more engaging when they are learning from peers who are outside of the normal circle. We look forward to using this sort of platform on an ongoing basis and I am currently investigating other potential collaborative projects. To see some pictures of the day and also to read some of the questions and answers please visit the Junior Library Blog at https://handburylibrary.wordpress.com/.
