In2science

In2science is an exciting and innovative program that places university students into high schools as peer mentors to inspire students to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) studies at school and beyond.

BSC has embraced In2science,  seizing the valuable learning opportunity for BSC students as well as the chance to promote a program that champions the STEM learning areas across all schools.

In2science mentors are invited to BSC and over 10 visits per semester they work with Year 8 and 9 students and their teachers in science and maths classes. These mentors currently study university STEM degrees, so in the classroom they act as role models, sharing their passion for STEM as well as their university study experiences. The Mentors concentrate on encouraging and engaging our students in their learning - aiming to

  • increase student engagement in science and mathematics
  • enhance understanding of content and dispel common misconceptions
  • break down stereotypes and provide a human face for science and maths and
  • build students’ own aspirations for STEM studies and careers

Feedback from staff and students shows that the program has been a great success again this year,  so we look forward to continuing our work with In2science throughout 2017.

Congratulations!

In2Science recently held an evening to acknowledge the hard work and commitment from teaching professionals in supporting their program.

The BSC community congratulates our Head of Learning - Science, Jessica Sartori, who was recognised for her support of the program at BSC, her flexibility in accommodating those tertiary student mentors who invest their valuable time here and for her constructive feedback to all stakeholders.

Jessica's well organised and positive approach reflects her commitment to ensuring that all sectors of the BSC community (students and staff) have benefited from the implementation of the program.

Head of Learning - Science

This award illustrates  the fabulous collaborative and cooperative nature of the relationship between the school and the In2science program.

I am very excited by (and very supportive of) the program,  but credit really goes to the fabulous team of STEM teachers here at BSC.

The Science Learning Area team is always so willing to embrace opportunities that will enhance and enrich student learning - and this enthusiasm is communicated to our students on a practical and day-to-day basis.  The team is really focused on maximising student outcomes in this Learning Area and as HoL - Science I thank them all for their continued and highly valued support.
