ikebana

Recently the Year 7 Arts of Peace elective group spent a lesson investigating the art of Ikebana - Japanese flower arranging.

Ikebana is a traditional art form that attempts to express laws of nature and beauty through balance and texture as well as colour. It is a creative meditation that can take many years of study to master.

Having already learned some basic theories and practices behind meditation, Yoga, Tai Chi and Kendo, our class was able to quickly grasp the basic concepts. Once let loose on a varied supply of flowers generously supplied by Brunswick grocer and supplier of fresh cut flowers LaManna Fresh ww.lamannafresh.com.au the BSC students showed a keen and enthusiastic understanding of proportional harmony and the ‘less is more’ principal - amongst other things. With a little guidance, this mindful crew produced some sublime arrangements, a small example of which you can see here.

Finished arrangements were placed in the main staff room and at the

General Office counter to be enjoyed and admired by all.

I enjoyed the challenge of putting lots of thought into where I placed each flower in order to make it tell a story.

Ikebana is a classical Japanese art form, so you have to put real thought into it. It was fun, but you also had to be in a creative thinking mode for it to work.
