We are very pleased and proud to announce that BSC Careers Counsellor, Catherine Jones, has been recognised for the work that she does here at BSC - and beyond.

On Thursday December 30, Catherine was presented  with the 2016 Ruth Chapman Award for her outstanding contribution to education in Victoria by the Careers Education Association of Victoria.  This award is a recognition of both the excellent work Catherine has done within our school community, and of her work to develop careers education and practice in the wider community.

Catherine initiated and implemented the Engaging Parents in Career Conversations program at Brunswick Secondary College. This program has become a framework and resource for use across all schools in Victoria.

Catherine's extensive knowledge of the many pathways and tertiary courses, the world of work and career, as well as her commitment to our students (and public education more generally) makes her an invaluable asset to our school community.

Our warmest congratulations to Catherine from all in the BSC community for this achievement.

Parents, guardians and family members can play an important role in helping guide a student's exploration of careers of interest. It is important that students have someone they can talk to about their thoughts and ideas, without judgement, and to discuss the pros and cons of the various options that they have available to them.  This process of working through the information and requirements is what will help a student make a choice that fits in with their future aspirations.

Communication is really important and encouraging your child's enthusiasm for exploring career options is vital. Young people respond well to casual conversations about careers so be ready when they ask questions about life after school.

EPICC WORKSHOPS

BSC offers language-specific careers information workshops that are tailored for families from the diverse range of language backgrounds. Thanks to a project funded by Centre for Multicultural Youth the school was able to develop translated resources for these workshops. These workshops have been held for Mandarin, Persian, Somali, Arabic and English speaking families. We also have provision for Vietnamese families.
