Middle School & HSIE Report

Middle School Faculty

Congratulations to all Year 7 Middle School students on the completion of their first semester at Henry Kendall High School. Students have produced some truly outstanding work over Terms 1 and 2 and your efforts should be commended.

Students produced outstanding Egyptian Artefacts in Global Awareness. Ms Tebb was amazed by students’ creativity and wonderful understanding of the ancient society. We have proudly displayed several artefacts in our school library and students, as well as teachers, have been impressed by the work completed by Year 7 Middle School students. I need to acknowledge the work of Maria Galindo Borda who created an almost life-size sarcophagus and mummy. This was a truly outstanding assignment and her excellent marks were well deserved.

Students in Project Based Learning were busily crunching numbers and researching prices as part of their Party Planner task this term. Students worked collaboratively to develop a party theme, develop a budget and a presentation to showcase their research. This task showcased students’ financial literacy and creativity. Mrs Jones and Ms Brien were impressed with the confident presentations which were completed as part of the task.

Congratulations to the following students for their outstanding results in Semester One:

Global Awareness – Yasmine Webb, Natarsha Grimley, Zoe Kinder, Maria Galindo Borda and Edvards Emolins.

Human Relationships – Li Ting Chang, Ruby McCarthy, Tansy Neaves, Chris Chen and Keely Sullivan.

Investigation and Communication – Mikayla Plant, Matthew Khan, Anastacia Zwanink and Yasmine Webb.

Project Based Learning – Tansy Neaves, Edvards Emolins, Brianna Bale, Briah Catton and Mackenzie Goodhew.

Don’t forget that Year 7-10 Parent Teacher Evening will be held on 26 July from 4.00pm. Traditionally, bookings with Middle School teachers have filled quickly and we look forward to seeing you.

All the very best for the approaching school holidays.

HSIE and Languages Faculties

Henry Kendall High School has played host to a group of students from Vietnam over the last two weeks. It has been a wonderful experience for our students to explore another culture and support their new Vietnamese friends to develop their English skills. Henry Kendall High School would like to thank Ms Jean Laffan for her coordination of the visit and organisation of host families. We would like to thank the families who opened their homes and hearts to the Vietnamese students. These students left for Sydney on Saturday 24 June and will have many fond memories of their time at HKHS.

It has been a very busy time for junior HSIE students as final assessment tasks for Term Two are completed. Year 7 YAP German and History students are busily preparing for their Celebration Evening early next term and producing excellent assessment tasks in class. Year 7 YAP students will begin their work in NSW Australian Curriculum Geography in Term Three and will explore Landscapes and Landforms. Miss McLennan and Mr Silver are organising a combined Year 7 Fieldwork Day to explore content in real settings across the Central Coast.

The holiday period is an important time for senior students in HSIE subjects. Students should be consolidating their work in class and developing summaries of completed topics. It is vital that HSC students are taking advantage of the time to complete Target Top 20 questions and seeking feedback from class teachers.

Wishing you all a safe holiday and looking forward to a busy Semester 2.

Mr Mark Macdonald – Head Teacher HSIE, Languages and Middle School
