Chess Team

On Friday 16 June, four Year 10 students competed in the NSW Junior Chess League Central Coast Gala Day. Zac Hegyessy, Mason Colwell, Senjay Turner and Oscar Tebbutt competed against a number of teams from Lakes Grammar, St Phillips and Green Point Christian College. At the end of the five rounds, the boys were undefeated and declared the Central Coast champions. They will go on to compete against winning Sydney schools next term. The students competed fairly and were very respectful of their opponents, with the adjudicators commenting on the great sportsmanship on display from all schools.

The boys have told me they have been practising every day to be ready for their upcoming Sydney rivals.

The SALSA Program

On Thursday 1 June, 20 Year 10 students were trained to become Students As LifeStyle Activists by facilitators from the University of Sydney. SALSA is a unique peer educational program designed to motivate high school students to lead a healthier lifestyle.

The students were involved in a variety of hands on activities to help them promote healthy lifestyles through good nutrition and physical activity. They devised an action plan to implement across the school community, and created a student survey about the school canteen to help guide their actions. They are now leading Year 8 through the program, mentoring them to live healthier lifestyles.

The student activists are to be congratulated for the excellent leadership and peer mentoring they are displaying.

NAIDOC Celebration

Our students went to Gosford High School yesterday for our NAIDOC Celebration where they participated in Indigenous dance, painting, bush garden, craft and cooking activities.

Henry Kendall High School students combined with Gosford High SchoolGosford Public School and Point Clare Public School students. Coming together as a community and learning about each other was such a unifying and rewarding experience for all involved.

Big thanks to Gosford High School for hosting the day and to Ms Selsby for her ongoing work with and dedication to our indigenous students.

HENRY KENDALL DEFEATS ST EDWARDS IN MOCK TRIAL ROUND 4

On Thursday 29 June, Henry Kendall students participated in Round 4 of the Mock Trial Competition against St Edwards at Gosford Local Court. The case was a Civil one, with the plaintiff (Eli Clarkson) suing Bo Van Den Broek for damages, because his dog attacked him when he was trying to deliver a parcel in the course of his employment as a postal worker. Ellena Kyriacou, as Barrister 1, gave an excellent opening address, outlining the plaintiff’s case. Brayden Gunn supported both Barrister’s well as the team’s solicitor. Sophie Bartlett, as Barrister 2 was excellent with her cross-examination of the defendant’s neighbour and her closing statement helped us win the round. Madelyn Lane was our second witness, and coped very well with cross-examination. Mason Colwell (Year 10) assisted the Magistrate as Magistrate’s Clerk, with many thanks going to the Office of the Department of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for providing us with Magistrate James Ly. Mr Ly commented on the obvious improvement in our Barristers this round. Congratulations to the entire team.
