NSW Advocate for Children and Young People
On Friday 28 July 2017, NSW Advocate for Children and Young People will be hosting an international conference on violence against children. Henry Kendall High School will be part of the conference listening to speakers from organisations such as World Health Organisation. Students will spend the afternoon working on the seven strategies to end violence against children (a global initiative). Young people would then feedback their ideas to the adult delegates at the end of the day. The feedback from our students will be an important part of the evidence that the Advocate will draw upon in Parliament in response to Ministerial reform and decision making.
Our attendance at this conference is therefore, a huge privilege and acknowledgement of the wonderful citizenship shown by our school community.
Who is the Advocate for Children and Young people?
The Advocate for Children and Young People is an independent statutory office reporting to the NSW Parliament through the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Children and Young People.
Andrew Johnson is the NSW Advocate. His role is to listen to children and young people and ensure they have a say in the decisions that affect their lives and to make recommendations to Parliament, government and non-government agencies on laws, policies and services that affect children and young people.
What is the Conference about?
Safety is one of the six themes of the NSW Strategic Plan for Children and Young People of which over 4,000 children and young people had input into. Addressing this theme, the Advocate is hosting an international conference to hear from experts what is currently being done around the world to end violence against children and discuss what still needs to happen. There will be two rooms at the conference; one for adults and one for young people. Both groups will hear from the same international speakers.
Where is the conference being held?
The conference will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney on 28 July 2017.
What will happen during the conference?
The day will begin with young people listening to four different speakers, all experts in the area of violence against children. You will have the opportunity to ask questions.
After lunch, young people will then work on a group activity around the World Health Organisation’s Seven Strategies to End Violence Against Children. You will be given the opportunity to present your ideas to the adult conference. They will then use what you tell them in their own group work.

For further clarification of any uniform issues and/or detention please ring the school.

Year 11 students have been given access to trial ATOMI only. The trial period is up to Week 5 next term.
