Special Education News

This term the Green Class has been studying rainforests.

They have learnt about the layers of the rainforest, the animals that live there and the dangers the rainforest face. They have had a great time creating their own interactive rainforest corner, and are now producing and starring in their own rainforest adventure movie!

Our 7/8 class participated in a food experience in the French class. Included in the choice were croissants, brie and pâté. They eagerly requested food items in French. Was it the opportunity to practise their French or was it the food they wanted?

Special Education Unit’s Come and Try Sports Day 2017

The Special Education Unit held a Come and Try Sports Day on Friday 2 June in the school grounds. This was an opportunity for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities to both try new sports and engage in a safe social environment. The school is fortunate to have excellent sports facilities and so made this a wonderful opportunity for students to come from the local area and engage with students from Henry Kendall. There were a total of 114 students involved in the day with representatives from five different local schools. This was the fifth time that this event has been held at Henry Kendall.

There was a total of 10 activities, with coaches from different associations available to instruct which the students rotated through; Aussie Rules Football, Rugby League, Netball, Adapted Cricket, Karate, Soccer, Judo, and an NRL State of Mind Campaign Video.  The special guest of the day was Mark O’Meley (Former NRL Super Star) All these individuals expressed to the students about the importance of trying their best and generated some very memorable moments to last a life time.

34 students from different year groups helped to support, instruct and provide services to the students on the day. Many of the visiting staff were very impressed with these representatives and they have been thanked with certificates of service.

Special thanks is given to the staff of the Special Education department for their supervision and support on the day. To the PDHPE department for allowing the use of all the practical spaces through the day. The coaches, celebrities for attending, the Gosford East Lion’s Club for providing refreshments and the coffee shop for keeping the staff hydrated. A fantastic day and we look forward to hosting it again next year.

Thankyou to the Wholly Quilters

The ladies from the Wholly Quilters made and donated 12 beautiful patchwork table runners which we now use in the Coffee Shop. They really give our Coffee Shop a lift. Staff and students really enjoy the new look and comment on how lovely they are and appreciate how much work has gone into them.

It was great to have the ladies from Wholly Quilters come in to the Coffee Shop this Wednesday to say thank you to them for the work they did and for them to see their table runners being used. They were really impressed with the students from the Special Education Department.
