Sports Report

House Athletics

The annual House Athletics Sports are to be held on Friday 8th March at Pedrina Park, commencing at 9.10am. There are lots of opportunities for all the students to participate on the day with a full program – only the 1500m events are being held before the day at lunchtime on the school oval. The successful program that was used for the first time in 2016 with both track and field events to be held simultaneously during the day will be used again with the addition of 200m B races and more competitors allowed in the throwing events. This has meant I will need as many parents and friends of the college to volunteer to assist during the day so please contact me if you are interested in helping for all or part of the day. House teams will be selected in House meetings during the next week and the programme of events will be in next week’s newsletter.

Swimming

A full report on the GD Swimming carnival being held today in Hamilton will appear in next week’s newsletter. The whole team attended a special lunchtime training session on Tuesday with our swimming coach Mr Ben Singh and good numbers have been attending afterschool sessions also so hopefully we can win back to back overall aggregate shields this year.

A report on last week’s successful House Swimming Carnival should appear in this newsletter from our swimming captains.

Team App

These have been set up for many our sports so far, this current season and are a great way to get instant notifications and messages on their smartphones or iPad about what is happening in the sport. Players and/or parents should get an email from the head of sport or coach setting them up and then can request to join. For more information, you can download “Team App” in the app stores or go to www.teamapp.com and start searching for “College” teams.

College Magpies Football

Please read below for important information from the administrators of the competition for the upcoming 2019 season. I will let people know if specific College Magpies details in the coming weeks and if you have any queries please contact myself.

Our “all in” training sessions will be held at the Rec Reserve (Friendlies Oval) on Wednesday night, 6 March and Pedrina Park on Wednesday night, 13 March. Both sessions will run from 5pm till 6pm and the coaching will be provided by Hamilton Kangaroos FNC players.

It would be appreciated if all existing players could please attend these sessions, and any new or prospective players in 2019 are also welcome/asked to attend.

Following these sessions our player/club allocation for this season will be conducted, with Clubs then commencing training the following week. New players coming after these sessions, or not providing their details on one of these nights may have their start to club training delayed.

It would also be appreciated if all players from 2018 still eligible in 2019 could advise their Club reps before these training sessions of whether they intend to play again this season.

The season will kick off on Sunday 7 April. We understand that is the first weekend of school holidays, but with the Junior Football Carnival on the third weekend in May and to get enough games into our HKJFA season, we feel a start on Sunday 28 April after the holidays, is too late. We hope to have a fixture released by the end of next week.

Senior School House Swimming

The Senior School House Swimming sports was the first for some and the last for the Year 12s. Not long after the first whistle, Arielle Dickeson had broken two records in her first two events. In the end she took out three records while Lachlan Rees set four new records. Throughout the day there was excitement and an unbelievable amount of cheering from all the Houses.

The final House Swimming day for the Year 12s was unforgettable. Laidlaw members were dressed in white and blue being very proud sailors.  Learmonthians were the work force of the day being dressed as fluro yellow tradies.  Berry House students were dressed in head to toe of red ready to fight, founded by the theme of Berry Brigade, and Young members brought out their inner luck with the tutu themed leprechauns.

Once the lunch break was called time didn’t stop.  The parent/teacher/student race began along with the Flipper Cup. The Flipper Cup is a joy-filled race with many laughs and smiles. Learmonth made a statement with the introduction of a large floating duck which attracted some students to the pool for the first time in a while. Following, was one of the most serious and anticipated events of the day - the parent/teacher/student race. All teams started very strong but as the students began to take the lead the teachers’ true colours came through. There were large amounts of cheating but never the less the students didn’t crumble under the pressure and still came out on top.

The final two events of the day were spectacular with the 18-20 boys’ and girls’ freestyle relay races being won by Laidlaw. The Coxon/Campbell Cheering Cup was awarded to Berry House along with the Flipper Cup for their great participation rate in this lunchtime event. The female and male champions of the pool are determined by the points gathered during the day for the best five events. The female champion and winner of the Fyfe Family Trophy was Arielle Dickeson on 128 points. The male champions who shared the Kerr Family trophy on 128 points were Lachlan Rees and Fergus Roberts. The Girls’ Aggregate was won by Laidlaw by 15 points over Young. The Boys’ Aggregate was won by Learmonth by 6 points with Laidlaw second. Finally, it all came down to the Grand Aggregate that was awarded to Laidlaw who won by an easy 155 points over Berry.

We would like to say a huge thankyou to the parents and friends who were there supporting so many on the day.  We would also like to thank the teachers and volunteer time keepers that made sure every swimmer was timed to perfection. A special mention to Mrs Kim Bright as Chief Referee and Mr Pete Delany as the starter and to Dr Hirst who carried the day with his enthusiastic and uplifting commentary. Lastly, thanks also to the team assembled to do all the work behind the scenes ensuring the day went along smoothly. The day was a major success with the bonus of the weather holding up.
