Boarding

Love Is/Was in the Air
Last Thursday we hosted the Valentines Day dinner after a big House Swimming Sports Day. With great thanks to Jonathan and Nikita for the organisation of the Valentines Day competition we had Harrison Beal and Izzy Azzopardi enjoy a formal dinner by candlelight with our resident musician Michael playing a heartfelt Spanish tune; albeit in front of 80 guests! Valentines Day was not only celebrated by Harrison and Izzy, but was embraced by all boarders. Each boy chose girls name from a hat, presented them with a heart shaped chocolate, and then escorted them to the dining table for the evening. It was wonderful to watch the conversations evolve over the evening and the maturity all boarders showed in embracing kindness to all.

Speirs House Orientation Games – Nick Palmer
The Speirs House boys have had a terrific start to the term. Many new faces have arrived at Speirs and have quickly become fully involved in day to day boarding life. This week we held our orientation boarding games. The Year 12s have some fun filled activities planned for the younger students. In the spirit of the games we reintroduced an old tradition of our Speirs ‘war cry’. This ‘war cry’, derived from the Geelong College war cry, was used many years ago to spark excitement, motivation and fervour among the students:

Jonathan Lee and Nikita Cavill reflected upon the orientation games:
We organised the orientation games as it is the activity to break the ice between students at the start of the year. It is also a welcoming ceremony for all the boarders, especially to for new boarders. We want all boarders to fit in and be comfortable with each other in our amazing and big boarding family. Orientation games have occurred every year since we have been here and has been an integral part of welcoming the new boarders into the community as well as those who are returning back t familiar surroundings. It is a bit of fun for the Year 12's as well who run the games and control what the younger ones have to do. As you can see from the photos it was a fun night for everyone and for a short moment had us away from a bit of study. Thank you to all of the staff who helped us organise the evening.
Best wishes,
Andrew Monk
