meet the job

Meet the Job was held at Brunswick Secondary College for the first time this year.

During Term 1, the college invited a number of professionals from a variety of fields to offer insight and information about the industry in which they work.

Staged in early March, the event was attended by over 150 students and family members (pre-Covid!). We were excited to host three panels of speakers covering the areas of arts/humanities, STEM and trades-based careers.

Students and families were entertained and educated - here is just a sample of our guest speakers:

  • Anchovychef Thi Le,  who discussed his travel to communities around the world to learn about ingredients
  • Scott Burchell, who began as a bicycle courier in London then went on to become an architectural master builder in Melbourne
  • Climate scientist, Steph Jacob,  who turned her high school science passion into her dream job
  • Katy Warner, who started out as an  independent theatre maker and is now an award-winning young adult novelist

Questions from the students who attended were insightful and imaginative – many panelists spoke about being impressed by the students’ engagement with their stories. the panelists fielded questions on training, study, pay, values, ethics and creativity, adn gave honest, funny and helpful answers – some of which were surprising! Everyone in attendance can be proud of their contribution to the success of the event.

BSC looks forward to hosting Meet the Job again in 2021, and to hearing about other fascinating career journeys.

I enjoyed the presentation as I learned helpful information for the future. I particularly enjoyed hearing from the nurse who had graduated from Brunswick Secondary College.

All the speakers I heard were great. I felt there was a lot of breadth in terms of different occupations and different career paths.  Some of these experts didn’t follow 'conventional' pathway into their careers - so this was very interesting to hear.
