‘Comparison is the thief of joy’ - Eleanor Roosevelt

It’s scary how much our attitude can shift without us realising. How we perceive ourselves in comparison to others can hurt our relationships, as well as our self-esteem.

In any group of people, there will always be someone taller, smarter, more popular, more experienced, and seemingly further ahead at life. Often, we fail to see the struggles of others, and we feel like the only one who is battling.

These are all lies! The devil loves to play on our insecurities and rob us of joy, gratitude, growth, and relationships. Rather than trying to please people, focus on the only opinion that matters - the One who never looks down on us.

Each of you must examine your own actions. Then you can be proud of your own accomplishments without comparing yourself to others.  Assume your own responsibility. (Galatians 6:4-5)

We can spur each other on by having a healthy attitude towards personal growth, being vulnerable in our relationships and supporting each other. We can take responsibility for ourselves rather than getting bogged down by how far behind we perceive ourselves to be.

There is no point in comparing ourselves to others, because no one on earth will have quite the same stories, backgrounds, or timing throughout their lives. Let’s put perceptions aside when we are in any group of people, so that instead we can use our differences in experiences to build community together.
