Y11 Australian & Global Politics

In Australian and Global Politics, students recently undertook a Model UN conference where they were tasked with passing a resolution that dealt with the issue of climate change. Students researched their country’s position on climate change by exploring how they would be impacted by climate change, their current plans for tackling the problem and what they need from other countries, and presented it to the conference. Students debated the various points of resolution and negotiated amongst themselves the changes they would like to make in the resolution. For example, the statement “Reiterates that international negotiations identify and prioritise geographical locations that are facing more imminent threats, and that internal elements of disproportion like money and gender, should be dealt with internally, accorded to with the features of the Declaration of Human Rights” was altered from, “Encourages Member States to address gender imbalance, with women forming the greater proportion of those suffering from the impacts of climate change, and to further support their role in mitigating climate change.” The students were highly engaged in their negotiations and discussions.
