Ricketts Point Excursion

As part of the BEST program, our Year 7 students participated in an excursion to Ricketts Point to investigate the classification of species found at our local Marine Sanctuary. Despite some wet weather, students were able to make the most of the opportunity to observe the species at Ricketts Point that they will classify in their upcoming PBL. Students participated in a Rock Pool Ramble where they observed species on the reef and considered how their adaptations affected their distribution on the reef. They also collected observations of different types of seaweeds and of local bird species. As part of this PBL students will also consider indigenous perspectives and consider alternative ways of organising and understanding these species.

STUDENT REFLECTION

On the 26th and 27th the Year 7s had a real highlight of the year; the Ricketts Point BEST excursion. We had loads of fun and learnt lots about classifying the different organisms on the beach. We played a fun game where we had to find as many different types as possible of seaweed and classify it, which involved a lot of seeing how similar the seaweed we found is to the ones on the paper. In general, despite it being a bit wet it was a great day, though unlucky for those who went on the 27th with rain making them have to come back early.
