Year 10 Outdoor Education - Rock Climbing

Peter Vowles, Outdoor Education & Physical Education

On 27 September our year 10 Outdoor Education class went rock climbing at Onkaparinga Gorge in the national park.

Prior to the experience the students practiced tying the required knots and learnt how to belay. The instructors reminded us of these techniques and checked the group throughout the day. The activity required a lot of trust in each other and class mates were very supportive and encouraging. Students helped each other to overcome challenges on the rock face by communicating where the climber could put their feet and motivating them to keep going to achieve their goal.

Even though there were patches of rain through the day, students enjoyed the challenge and the experience. Abseiling off the top of the cliff required full commitment to take that first step over the top but the view was so good when you looked around on the way down.

The students learnt a lot about themselves, trusting and working with each other. They looked after the environment and really appreciated the time spent outside despite the rain.
