DEVOTION
Reformation Day
On Monday, Living Waters will join Christians around the world in celebrating Reformation Day. Over 500 years ago Martin Luther, a Roman Catholic monk in Germany, took a stand against the false teachings of the church at the time. Luther had been trying to live a life worthy of Jesus, but he kept falling short. As he studied the Bible, he found the following verses:
Romans 3:23-24, ‘for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.’ And Ephesians 2:8-9, ‘For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.’
Luther realised that none of us can earn our way into heaven – instead it is a free gift, through the grace of God.
One of the ways that Luther re-formed the church was by translating the Bible from Latin (which only the priests understood) into German, the language that the common people spoke. This allowed people to read the Bible and discover this truth for themselves. We are an ongoing testament of the Reformation today, as we live by faith under the grace of Jesus. What a wonderful reason to celebrate!
