NSWCCC Touch

On Monday 6th June 2016, three students from

St Philomena’s School travelled to Dubbo to compete in the NSWCCC Touch Football Trials. In order to have made it to this level, Chloe Brazel (Year 7), Shania McMillan (Year 10), and Jaime Clissold (Year 10) previously competed in the Diocesan trials in Inverell, where they were individually selected.

On Tuesday 7th June 2016, the girls each played five 20 minute games, varied throughout the day. Chloe Brazel played in the Armidale Diocese Junior Girls' team, and both Shania McMillan and Jaime Clissold played in the Armidale Diocese Open Girls' team.  Apart from the numerous showers of rain and extremely cold weather, it was a very enjoyable day. Unfortunately none of the girls were successful in being selected for the next level they have taken a positive experience away with them.

Cochrane Cup - Netball Juniors

On Thursday 9th June, a bus load of Secondary students traveled to Armidale to compete in Cochrane Cup.  It was an early and fresh 5:30am start for the 3.5hr bus trip. The netballers played a total of seven games against the following teams: Holy Trinity of Inverell, O'Connor of Armidale and St Mary's of Gunnedah.

We had a team of nine girls from Years 7 and 8 and the games were ten minute halves. We won four out of our seven games and had a lot of fun. Many of the scores were very close and all the players should be very proud of the results.

We would like to thank Miss Banson, Miss Humphries, Ed Saunders, and Miss Reed for coming along and helping the day go ahead.

Cochrane Cup - Netball Seniors

Last Thursday 9th June the awe-inspiring Years 9 and 10 girls' netball team went on a tour to the mountainous region of Armidale for a challenging day of netball. Despite the blustery weather the first game commenced at 10am and

St Philomena’s took the court with prodigious vitality.

Although our girls' put up a strong fight, McCarthy were lucky and came away with a win in the second game, against O’Connor 2, the girls' played strategically and had a strong win, 21 to 6. The third and fourth games against St Mary’s and O’Connor 1 were losses but the girls continued to support each other for a win against Holy Trinity 13 to 8.

Overall the girls showed endless amounts of positivity and sportsmanship, coming in fourth and being proud of their efforts.

Rugby League Report

On Thursday 9th June, sixteen boys went to Armidale to play in the Cochrane Cup and Diocesan 2017 selection trials. In the first game against St Mary’s of Gunnedah, the boys played well but were beaten. O'Connor of Armidale was their second match with all the boys playing a great game. The boys had a well earned rest before playing their third game against Holy Trinity of Inverell. It was a tough game and Inverell just managed to win. Moree’s last game was against McCarthy but unfortunately came out with four straight losses but they all played well and were recognised for their sportsmanship throughout the day. Jock Brazel was one of the star players who made the Armidale Diocesan Squad along with Jack Montgomery. All the boys had a great day and gained good experience for next year.  A huge thanks to Mr Cook and

Mr Adams for donating their time to help us train at lunchtimes and travelling over to coach us on the day.

Students are expected to make their own way to the oval and will travel by bus back to school at the end of the day.

Students are expected to attend the carnival in their sports house colours or the school sports uniform. Our Athletics Carnival is part of the school curriculum; therefore, attendance from all students is expected.  Students who cannot participate due to illness or injury are required to be present on the day as helpers or spectators. Parents are encouraged to attend the carnival and support their child/children. Any helpers on the day would be greatly appreciated. A BBQ lunch and canteen will be operating on the day.
