Hidden Stories in Art
In late March, the Year 9 Scribes and Scribblers class went on an excursion to the National Gallery of Victoria.
We met a lovely lady named Suzie May who took us on a tour of the Asian section of the gallery. We were told amazing facts and found out the history about many artefacts such as paintings, sculptures, armour, clothing and accessories. We gathered inspiration and ideas from many artefacts to prepare for a short story assignment piece that will be written next term.
Suzie also took us into the European section and told us about the mystery disappearance of the Weeping Woman painting by Picasso, and showed us a painting that was assumed to have been painted by Vincent Van Gough, but was actually anonymously painted.
We then got the opportunity to write two quick short story pieces – one based on a painting titled Anguish by August Friedrich Albrecht Schenck, and the other based on a large contemporary photograph by Bill Henson.
We ended the day with writing one last short story piece on a more contemporary photograph of a Tribal Fighter.
We really enjoyed the experience and thank Suzie for being a wonderful guide. We cannot wait to use the inspiration we got from amazing hidden stories in the art and tell our own stories through writing!

Heart and Soul Week
Multi-Faith Panel
As part of our religious education program, we hosted our very own Multi-Faith Religious Q&A panel. Our guest speakers did a wonderful job at communicating their faith, background and religious practices to our Years 9 and 10 students.
We would like to thank Miss Gabby Davis who spoke about Judaism, Dr Akhil Gupta who informed us about the Hindu faith, Ms Samira Zemaryalai who taught us about what it means to be Muslim and Rev Warren Clarnette who gave us a deeper understanding of Christianity.
Jewish Museum
The Year 8 excursion to the Jewish museum was exciting and interesting. We had the chance to visit a synagogue and learn about Jewish customs. After being split into groups, we visited three exhibit areas in the museum itself.
We learnt about Jewish months, festivals, traditions, history and other facts about Judaism (including how many Jewish people live in Australia and when/why they moved). We had a brief discussion about the Torah, and how things run at the Synagogue. We also learnt about Jewish life in Australia. We finished with a Shabbat ceremony.
Emily Chen, Year 8B
The first Jewish tradition we enjoyed was seeing the boys wearing kipper in the synagogue as a sign of respect. We were then split into three groups and led around by a tour guide who was really nice and interesting. We looked at the history of Judaism, how Judaism impacted Australia, the Jewish festivals and how it is to live as a Jewish person. Overall, we had a great time and learned lots. It was really fun!
Fraya Healy, Year 8B
As a Jewish person, I highly enjoyed seeing my classmates learn about Judaism and found their reactions quite educational. Often an outsider will shed new light on something when seeing it for the first time, whilst someone who has known the thing in question might not have noticed. Finally, I had a good conversation with the tour guide about the nature of Judaism and Judaic history.
Jake Prager, 8B
We started out at the synagogue and learnt about how it is separated by gender. This was followed by a special tour through the museum where we learnt about the Torah, the history, rules, prayer, culture, history and traditions, and how the Jewish people survived the infamous holocaust.
At the end of the experience, we finished by having a Shabbat ceremony as a group. Going to the Jewish museum was an incredibly touching experience for many of us.
Matthew O’Leary, 8B
Holy Mustard
To conclude our Heart and Soul week, we hosted the Christian group ‘Mustard’ who came and provided an interactive workshop with our Year 7 students. Students enjoyed the music, games, drama and discussions that were part of this morning. It was a wonderful way to finish a very busy but meaningful week.
