Year 9 Music – Harry Potter Excursion

Year 9 Music – Harry Potter Excursion
On Wednesday the 15th of November, the Year 9 Music class went to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s open rehearsal for their upcoming performance of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, Live in Concert. We got to see how the conductor, Nicholas Buc, interacted with the members of the orchestra and kept them all playing in time. While watching the rehearsal we got to listen to the magical music by film composer John Williams and some of the most famous musical passages from the Harry Potter films. There was a big screen above the orchestra where the movie played while the orchestra was playing the music. We then got to learn how the conductor makes sure the music is in sync with the movie playing above them. The conductor has a screen where a dot flashes to give him the tempo and green or red lines that tell the composer to start the music or to stop the music.
