Maths Update
Mathematical understanding is very important for our students to develop. Therefore, we need to ensure, as teachers, that students are being taught what they are ready to learn.
Beginning late last year, Staughton College began to participate in the Mathematical Association of Victoria’s (MAV) Future Ready program. Through this program, we have implemented changes to the way we teach Mathematics and also to what students learn. We have done this using evidence based practices and by ensuring all students know what they are ready to learn. Targeted teaching has allowed students to access curriculum that is suitable to their level of progression. This has led to more accurate assessment of students’ learning needs and also their development.
With the use of more accurate data, teachers are now better able to assess which AusVELs progression point students are achieving. This may mean that students do not appear to progress based on assessment made in previous years. What is essential is that students are demonstrating progress throughout the different units as evidenced by their unit rubrics, assessment data and teacher observations. This year will see a transition in how students are assessed in Mathematics, and will allow you to have a more accurate understanding of your child’s progress in Mathematics.
The development of the MAV Future Ready program is an ongoing process, which will lead to continued growth for all students in their mathematical abilities.
