Subject Selections

Students from Years 11 to 8 have either finished selecting their subjects for 2020, or are about to. The course counselling process is an important part of the Careers preparation work with our students, and a lot of effort goes into making sure each student has their own managed individual pathway. If any parents or guardians have questions about course selections, or career planning please do not hesitate to call Ms Cathy Armstrong and her team in the Careers Room.

Year 12 VCAL Boot Camp

From Monday 12 August until Wednesday 21 August all Year 12 VCAL students took part in a Job Ready Boot Camp.  This intensive preparatory program, designed to equip them for when they have completed school, included goal setting using the SMART goal protocol, team building, developing a résumé and mock interviews.  Students received feedback and on the completion of the program, all students received a certificate acknowledging the work they had done during the Boot Camp.  Congratulations to all the Year 12 VCAL students who completed this program and in particular, to Colleen Tupou and Toby Collins-Smith who both received an award for outstanding achievement across the entire program.  Congratulations to the Senior Sub School Team for organising such a wonderful opportunity for our students.

Jane Pollock working with teams of staff

This year we are again working with Jane Pollock to assist our newest staff members to make the most effective use of the Instructional Learning Cycle (LATAR) we have implemented.  In Term 1, she worked with the new staff to ensure they are effective and confident using this cycle and to provide guidance and support around planning and implementing the cycle during lessons.  On Friday 23 August, Jane worked with the group who started as new staff to SASC in 2018 to build on the work they started with her last year.  These days have been well received by staff, who have reported feeling well supported in the use of LATAR and lesson construction that best enhances student outcomes and incorporate the high yield instructional strategies.

VET Hospitality Principals’ lunch

The Year 11 VET Hospitality class organised a lunch for local Principals on Tuesday 20 August and approximately 24 staff from several local Primary and Secondary schools attended.  The Hospitality class is based at St Albans Secondary College and includes students from a few of the other local secondary schools.  All who attended were impressed by the presentation and taste of the delicious 3-course lunch that was served. Congratulations to the class and to Ms Max Smith who is the teacher and mentor for the class and oversaw the proceedings for this great network occasion.

A matter of debate

Congratulations to our three debating teams who finished on top of the ladder at the end of regional season.

Whilst two of the three teams were eliminated in the first preliminary rounds, the Year 10 team defeated Xavier College to progress to the next level – play offs across the state. We wish them all the very best in their next debate.

Congratulations to all our debating team members, and to Debating Coordinator who have supported this excellent program.
