Philosophy Competition Winners

This year saw the inaugural Melbourne Girls’ College Philosophy Competition. There were many excited students who jumped at the opportunity to grapple with some hefty philosophical problems and submitted poems, essays, works of art, and videos expressing their thoughts.

The prompts were:

‘In life it is not the destination but who you go on the journey with that matters’

And

‘If you could ask your pet one question what would it be and why?’

Congratulations to everyone who entered the competition this year. It was a delight reading everybody’s entries. There were many thoughtful submissions, which made judging very difficult.

The first place winner and the runners up each received a Readings gift card, generously donated by the Parents Association!

Life is not about the destination, but who you take the journey with, by Ana Graham Perez 7L1

The journey of life,

with those you love,

has numerous changes,

At the end from where you began

The day your life starts;

the journey begins,

with those you’ll know forever,

who have joy and love within

The first of your friends;

may disappear forever,

but soon others will come,

and leave memories for you to remember

You sit in your room,

escaping their talk,

wishing they weren’t so harsh,

trying to disregard their mock

You adventure together,

to the world of unknown,

since now you’re independent,

nothing is more important than a phone

As you sit in your apartment,

that your parents helped afford,

you wonder why you were so cruel,

when you were only being adored

Only a few of your first,

have made it so far,

but those who have,

memories so large could not be kept in a jar

The most dreadful day,

you will ever know,

is the day the news came,

your parents; forever gone

Life goes by in a flash,

with those you love,

family and friends,

who may not look out for you from above
