Year 10 Outdoor Education Aquatics Camp

Peter Vowles, Outdoor Education & Physical Education

On 7 and 8 November our Year 10 Outdoor Education class undertook an overnight camp at the Murraylands Aquatic Centre. The weather could not have been better for aquatic activities on the river. On Monday it was a sunny 30 degrees with very light winds, which helped us to be very successful learning to stand up paddle board and kayak.  The conditions on the river were ideal for knee boarding and every student was able to experience this.

Students cooked a meal with their partner on the trangias at sunset. There were definitely a few mosquitoes in the evening but that didn’t dampen our spirits. Students enjoyed spending time together under the stars and the full moon, before sleeping in our tents. Waking up on Tuesday, it was hot with a gentle breeze, so we were able to use the catamarans and learn how to sail. Understanding how to use the rudder to steer and adjust the sails to get us moving was new to all the students. In very little time, the catamarans were being sailed up and down the Murray River and partners were working really effectively together. Skills were also extended to behind the ski boat with students also water skiing.

This was a very successful camp. Students were well organised and collaborated well to learn new skills on the water and apply camp craft.
