Foundation/Year 1

Mathematics

Foundation/One students participate in 'Builders' activities during their four mathematics sessions throughout the week.  After participating in a 'collective'  mini lesson, students break into small groups and rotate through different stations to practice their numeracy skills with fun, hands-on activities.

A great way to start a conversation about your child's school day is to ask them about their favourite Builders activity.

Inquiry

We have been learning about gender and identity and the fostering of positive gender relationships. The lessons we have undertaken have been facilitated from lessons from the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program and supported by materials provided by the 'Safe Schools' program.

Newlands Primary School acknowledges that people identify in different ways and have different orientations, gender identities and sexualities. We celebrate individuality and encourage students and staff to be happy with who they are and what they want to be, and we ensure that a variety of role models are available to them. We value a diverse curriculum and community that is inclusive of people.

We acknowledge that students may wish to express their identity by the clothes they wear, the gender they identify as or the groups they identify with.

Below is a list of the learning intentions and success criteria, examples of the activities we undertook and a Youtube clip of the book we read during the lessons we did this week.

The Learning Intention:

Reflect on their identity: likes, dislikes, strengths.

Develop an awareness of positive gender norms.

Develop an appreciation of differences.

The Learning Intention:

Reflect on their identity: likes, dislikes and strengths.

Develop an appreciation of difference in others.

The Learning Intention:

Share and explore pronouns through discussion of literature and art.

Explore the concept of pronouns with students and to embrace differences in the classroom community.

Explore the concept of gender expression.

The Success Criteria:

I can identify that it is not helpful to apply labels to people.

I practice using statements which challenge the limiting nature of gender labels.

The Success Criteria:

I can embrace individual differences in the classroom and in our global community.

I  accept and embrace the many ways we may choose to express who we are through clothing and hairstyles.

I can think about how we all can be similar to and different from each other.

The Success Criteria:

I recognise that the games, clothes and colours that people prefer do not have to match with whether they are a boy or a girl.

I can express my identity by the clothes I wear and the gender I identify as.

School photos

School Photos day is Wednesday 24th March.  Please ensure that you have returned the photos envelope to your child's teacher before the day.  No cash can be taken by the school, families need to pay via the photo company's website and include their receipt number on the envelope.  For families who have more than one child attending the school, family photo envelopes are available via the school office.

We ask families to make sure that their children are dressed in correct school uniform, and at school before 9am on photo day.
