COLLEGE AND INTERNATIONAL CAPTAINS

Hi everyone,

With last year being a trying one, we would like to present to you the hard work that has been going on behind the scenes of the school. We, the college captains along with the student leadership team, have been focusing on building and initiating school pride.

The SRC and International team are working hard to promote ‘Everybody Belongs’ day held on the 19th of March. The day incorporates ‘Bullying-No-Way!’ and ‘Harmony day’. This is a theme day where students will be able to dress in their national costume, the bullying-no-way T-shirt or hoodie as well as wearing a splash of orange. We hope to see everyone in either options or a mix and match of all!

This year, we are focusing on the cultural connectedness and diversity of the Brighton Secondary College community. The current situation prevents our international students being able to celebrate the Lunar New Year with their families. Therefore, our international team decided to celebrate the Chinese New Year, on 12th to the 15th of February; with many activities such as trivia, the Ox paper folding and the Kahoot quiz for students to learn about different cultures. Moreover, we want our students to demonstrate the BSC school pride, we offer leadership opportunity for international students from all year levels to be part of the International committee. We encouraged students to get involve in the school activities, the International and House choir for Chorals.

We have been able to support the House Leaders with the incorporation of House coloured ribbons at the World’s greatest shave event held on the 12th of March. This is an SRC event where students are able to shave/cut their hair, spray paint their hair or wear a ribbon that represents their house. We are promoting the new house names through the inclusion of the ribbons and the House Leaders are running the ‘House Spirit’ competition on the day. The new house names are Brennan, Goldstein, Kirby and Mabo.

Throughout the past month we have had the opportunity to speak at the Year 7,8 and 11 student assemblies and awarding/congratulating the Year 7 and 8 Class Captains for Semester 1. Attending these Year level assemblies had allowed us to communication the many opportunities that the school presents and has presented to us over the years that has led us to where we are today. Leadership and being involved is an important aspect of school life and students should use this time to take as many opportunities as possible. We all should follow the school values of Respect, Excellence, Curiosity, Integrity, Teamwork and Empathy and to become the greatest people we can be.

We were lucky enough to attend the Smoking ceremony on 18th of February in the amphitheatre. This sacred event was conducted by Mr. David Tournier, who is the Boon Wurrung Senior Cultural officer. The school is situated on Boon Wurrung land and we were able to pay our respects to the land and people. It was also a special way to welcome our new Year 7 students and 2021 with positivity and respect through the cleansing ceremony.

In the afternoon of the 18th of February, we were able to hold and present our first College assembly, where we were able to induct all our 2021 student leaders. We also celebrated our 2020 High achievers on the 24th of February where we were able to see the determination of the 2020 Year 12 cohort and be inspired by their persistence when striving for excellence.

Wishing you all the best with kindest regards,

Kiyara, Issy & Bethany
