R.E News - Assistant Principal / Mission

Mr Damian Roff

Lent

As we enter into the 3rd week of Lent it is worth reminding ourselves of ways we can prepare for the great feast of Easter. Prayer is a great way to prepare. Focus on personal prayer, make an effort to get to church for Mass or the stations of the cross or join a Lenten group. We even have one at College!

Abstinence and fasting get a lot of press lately for health benefits but they are also a strong action to increase spirituality and to highlight the concept of waiting and self discipline before Holy week. Almsgiving or charity is also a great way to prepare and to give those in need. Traditionally Project Compassion Boxes are given to Catholics to support Caritas. Students at O'Connor have been given a box to take home. Perhaps the money saved from abstaining from, for example, chocolate, could be used to support those in need.

Lenten Group

The Lenten Group meets every Thursday during Lent in De La Salle Chapel at 3.35pm. Everybody is welcome.

Bishop O'Mahony Sesquicentenary

A Sesquicentenary  is a celebration of 150 years since a significant event. 150 years ago Bishop O'Mahony was the first Bishop of Armidale. He arrived in Australia in 1871 to take up his position as the Bishop of Armidale and remained Bishop until 1877 when he resigned his post. On Tuesday March 9, Archbishop Anthony Fischer will conduct an oration on Bishop O'Mahony in the Cathedral commencing at 5.45pm. There will be music and the colourful life of Bishop O'Mahony will certainly be worth recounting. It would be great to see as many O'Connor families there as possible.

200 years of Catholic Education in Australia

As part of ongoing celebrations in Australia there will be a prayer service at College Assembly on Monday March 8.

Almighty and all-loving God,

with gratitude for the endeavours of Catholic education in the past,

with confidence in our Catholic pre-schools, schools and universities today,

and with faith in their continuing contribution in the future,

we celebrate 200 years of Catholic education in this Great South Land.

As our Heavenly Father,

we thank you for your providential care for your children in this land

in inspiring priests, religious and lay people

to found and staff our schools in ages past.

Through them the Good News of your Son was brought to the young

even in colonial times – and ever since.

As Christ the Teacher,

you grace the staff and leaders of Catholic education today.

As they build on the achievements of their predecessors

direct them in their present efforts

to ensure that every young Australian has the opportunity

for an excellent education and formation in faith.

As our Inspiring Spirit,

you lead us into the future.

In the century ahead grant those teaching and

learning in our schools,

those planning and leading,

and the families and community that entrust

their young people to us,

a love of learning and a willingness to be the

face of Christ.

Pour out your abundant blessings upon all involved in

the ministry of Catholic education. Amen.

Year 11 Mass

Thank you to Father Roel for celebrating mass with Year 11 last week. At the end of Mass Year 11 students were given the opportunity to apply to become Lasallian Youth Leaders for 2021. After some interviews we are looking forward to  announcing these Leaders at our school assembly on Monday as part of a special celebration of 200 years of Catholic education in Australia.

Saints Mary and Joseph Cathedral Parish

Keeping in touch with what is happening in the Cathedral Parish is easy through their website and Facebook pages.

With such a difficult year it has been harder for parishioner's to give to the parish through the plates, particularly when the church was closed. The Parish account details are available on the Parish bulletin.
