Library

Term 1 is off to a great start with our holiday reading ‘Book Bingo’ winners receiving their book pack prizes. The staff winner is Mr Wawrzyk and our student winner is Jamie Renton from Year 12. Congratulations to all of our participants, it was great to see how many books were collectively read over the break.
Miss Klein has enjoyed meeting our Year 7 students during library orientations and is happy that so many are utilising the library for reading and completing homework during breaks. She was also excited to run a ‘Book Speed Date’ activity with Miss Jackson’s Year 8 English class to assist the students in finding books of interest and to encourage reading for pleasure.
The library celebrated Library Lover’s Week with students borrowing ‘Blind Date’ books, making origami heart bookmarks, writing reviews and participating in the book cover design competition. The winner of the competition was Scarlett Pascoe in Year 7.
The library is now celebrating Mardi Gras with a display of LGBTQI novels and a bookmark design competition which will close Wednesday 10 March.
March is Women’s History Month and a display has been set up in the library to encourage students to find out more about a range of exceptional women from across the globe.
The community puzzles are once more out for students to complete and already this Term, one has been finished and two more are well on their way to being completed. Origami has also been a hit with students with many cranes, hearts, crowns and origami bookmarks decorating the library. Miss Klein has been learning about the many origami folds while helping students follow the instructions to create a range of origami pieces including origami frogs.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) has begun for 2021. Students are encouraged to participate and are able to see Miss Klein for details around the challenge.
Lists of PRC books are found on the challenge website and through our library catalogue, Oliver, that students are able to access via the student portal. Last year Pia McLean-Barth and Chase Aldridge completed the challenge with Chase receiving a medal for successful completion of the challenge throughout his schooling career.
The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Notables list has been announced and copies of the books are on display in the library. These books are recognised in the industry as being of high quality with contemporary and engaging content. New books have begun to trickle into the library with, among others, Lore, Concrete Rose and You Should See Me in a Crown now on the shelves.
Reading and writing for pleasure are key focuses of the library. This year Miss Klein is establishing a creative writing club that will meet every Week B Friday Break 1 in the library. The focus is on the fun of writing and providing students an opportunity to develop their writing voice and style through short activities and peer support. Any students that are interested are to see Miss Klein for details.
