Year Advisers Reports

Years 8, 10 & 12

Year 8 have settled into the new year brilliantly, the change from middle school to regular classes can be difficult. However most students have done very well and are enjoying the two new classes that have been introduced to our school this year; Applied Learning and Wellbeing.  Keep up the great work.

On 15 February 2021 we had our annual swimming carnival.  It was fantastic to see so many Year 8 students participate and support their house group.  A big congratulations to age champions, Dylan Wade, Isaac He and Haylie Green. Also, well done to Caleb Perkins who had a fantastic go at many races and even helped his house in the relay event when they needed someone, fantastic sportsmanship and effort.

Each week at our Year Assembly we celebrate another fantastic week with a Henry’s Hero draw - Congratulations to our winners so far. Don't forget there is always another chance to win at the end of term when have our big draw with special prizes.  Keep up the great work!

Last year due to COVID-19, we were unfortunate not to be able to have the Year 7 2020 Orientation Camp.  We are pleased to announce that Camp has been rescheduled for next term and (the now) Year 8 students will be attending camp at the Great Aussie Bush Camp in Kincumber  for three days and two nights of fun, learning and team building.  Students will receive permission forms and information packs shortly.  Please keep an eye out for them.

Looking forward to a wonderful year filled with learning and growing!

Mrs Karen Hogan

Year 8 Adviser

Hello all, I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as Year 10 Adviser for 2021. I feel very fortunate to be taking on this role and look forward to an exciting year ahead with the wonderful Year 10.

It was amazing to see such a great turnout of Year 10 students at the 2021 Swimming Carnival. There was plenty of house pride on show as well as exceptional performances both in and out of the pool (if dancing was an event, we’d win gold for sure!). Congratulations to our Age Champions, Alexander McGavin and Georgia Muspratt.

Speaking of swimming, we’re about to ‘dive’ into a very eventful year indeed! Hopefully parents and caregivers received my letter home outlining the many events and opportunities available to Year 10 this year, starting off very soon with ordering our senior jackets!

Year 10 make sure you join the Google Classroom and have a look at the new option for the HKHS Senior Jacket.  A Google Form has been posted where you can cast your vote. Ordering should commence mid Term 2.

Our Peer Mentors also have an exciting opportunity to demonstrate their flare for leadership as they join Year 7 on their camp in Week 10. A wonderful chance for these students to become role models to the incoming Year 7 cohort and develop a sense of adventure along the way.

Well done to all students on a brilliant start to the year!

Ms Natalie Hammond

Year 10 Adviser

Year 12 has definitely hit the road running this year.   At this stage students have almost completed half of their HSC courses and the time will fly from now on.

I will be talking to students about the importance of balance in their lives, this is key to success.  Previous high achievers will tell you about having a healthy diet, getting plenty of sleep, making time to exercise, some time with friends, and cutting back on work hours, all of which have helped them to achieve academic success.

The Year 12 Life Ready Camp was a fantastic way to start the year, just about all of Year 12 attended. Students learnt about challenging themselves, facing fears, communicating, teamwork and resilience.

There was lots of fun as well with activities such as surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, archery, giant swing and leap-of-faith. The weather was good to us and a great time was had by all.  Many thanks to the teachers who gave up family time to attend and in particular Mr Wright who organised the camp under pretty difficult circumstances.

Most students are heading into the second major task of their courses and they need to ensure they stay on top of their work. Most importantly they need to seek assistance if they are struggling with the workload. The day before the task is due is too late to seek help or apply for an extension. The HSC mark is made up of their exam mark plus their school mark, which comes from these assessments. It is important for students to do their best in these tasks to maximise their rank and school mark. Students should come to see me, Mrs James or Student Services if they need assistance.  Many students also have requested, and have been assigned a staff mentor who is able to provide support.

A date for your calendar – the Year 12 Formal will be held on Tuesday November 11 at the Crowne Plaza, Terrigal.  Year 12 will be participating in fundraising activities to help meet the cost. We have already had our Valentines Day fundraiser which was very successful.
