LIBRARY NEWS

This Week in the Library

Welcome to Week 5 in the library, it’s hard to believe we’re nearly halfway through the term already. Over the last two weeks Kindergarten students borrowed their first library books which was exciting and are beginning to get into the routine of bringing them back too. It’s great to see the simple pleasure that reading can bring.

This term students are reading a variety of books over a number of themes. Apart from learning about the library, Kindergarten will be reading books based around ‘friendship’ and have thoroughly enjoyed ‘Greetings from Sandy Beach’ and ‘Rose Meets Mr Wintergarten’ by Bob Graham. This week they’ll be reading some of Alison Lester’s Noni the Pony series which is always popular.

Year One and Two are listening to books from a great Australian author too and this week we are reading ‘Uno’s Garden’ by Graeme Base. At first glance, it appears as a counting and ‘I Spy’ book but it also cleverly integrates a story of the importance of caring for God’s creation (the environment and animals). We’re also having fun coming up with our own fantasy creature like the one’s found in Uno’s Garden too.

Stage 2 are also listening to books by legends of Australian literature and have enjoyed reading Leigh Hobbs’ ‘4F for Freaks’ and ‘Saving Ms Fosdyke’ by Morris Gleitzman. They’ve laughed as they’ve drawn a ‘freak’ version of themselves, in Leigh Hobbs style too.

Finally, Stage 3 are exploring the growing area of ‘Graphic Novels’. We’ve learnt that graphic novels are stories that are a combination of images and text in comic book style. One important feature of graphic novels is that they are not a genre but are a format and can be fiction or non-fiction. This week we will be looking for features of graphic novels - panels, frames, gutters, speech bubbles, thought bubbles, close-ups, bleeds and sound effects - on the digital graphic novel ebook collection (SORA). Over the final weeks of the term they will be creating their own graphic novel which I’m looking forward to sharing with you. What a busy term already!

Coming Up - Premier’s Reading Challenge

Coming home soon will be a permission slip for your child to participate in an optional reading initiative, the 2021 NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). The challenge involves children reading books from selected lists, logging them online with the PRC and receiving a completion certificate later in the year. The challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for pleasure in students and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge for each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. This year, many of our infants’ classes will be participating as a group but if you would like more information about the challenge, visit the PRC website:

New Books & Game Alert!

Our Australian Standing Orders books have begun to arrive and students have loved getting their hands on the brightest and newest stories in the library. I am always blown away by the beautiful cover art, particularly of the non-fiction books. They’ve certainly come a long way from looking like dull information books! You can find them on the New Release stand.

If you've ever played it, you will understand how much fun the game 'Spot It' is. From little kids to our secondary ones, this has become a big hit.
