TEXTILES

SUSTAINABILITY IN TEXTILES

Our school is part of a Climate Clever initiative this year, and we are always looking at ways to be more sustainable. So for our first Project in Textiles the students were asked to choose a product they could re-design to become more sustainable.

Josh and Claire chose to focus on the product of “Cling Wrap” and found that it is not very environmental. Cling wrap is single-use, made from plastic and takes a long time to biodegrade. They have created a much more sustainable alternative made from Beeswax and Coconut/Jojoba oil – this can be washed and reused to cover vegetables and snacks.

Kirrah chose to focus on the Kitchen Sponge which is somewhat re-useable but often not long-lasting. She experimented with a variety of different fabrics but found the combination of denim, flannel and polar fleece the most absorbent and effective – The “Un Paper Towel”.

Breanna chose to focus on creating a macramé bag to learn and build on her knotting skills. She experimented with an alternative sustainable option made from old t-shirt material.

Fern created a sandwich pouch which had a waterproof lining, and Savannah chose to look at cotton wool buds that are only single-use she decided to create some make up remover pads using reclaimed materials.

Stay tuned for the next Textiles Project,

Ms Handley.
