Brodi Henderson – 2021 Infrastructure Trainee
Apprenticeship Careers Australia has teamed up with NSW Government Schools Infrastructure and TAFE NSW to design a 2-year traineeship program in the infrastructure sector to provide employment and training opportunities for year 12 school leavers across NSW.
Recruitment for 2023 Trainees is currently open with 140 positions available across NSW to start in February 2023. Successful applicants complete a 24-month, Certificate IV level qualification in Project Management, Procurement & Contracts, or Business. The traineeship is divided into 3 eight-month work placement rotations providing end-to-end industry experience within a government agency, a contracting agency, and a construction company.
After completing year 12 in 2020, I was unsure of what career path I wanted to follow. I applied for a Project Management traineeship in December 2020 and was lucky enough to receive a position. I started with Lipman Construction in March 2021 in Coffs Harbour where I worked on a $14 million project building a 4-storey social housing complex consisting of 40 units and a 2-storey office for Mission Australia. With Lipman, I fulfilled a site administrator role in the site office with a really great team and absolutely loved the tasks I was given.
My second rotation was completed at Clarence Correction Centre with Serco where I undertook a Contract Gap Analysis task, to ensure that all detention and immigration centres around Australia are following correct contract procedures. It was an amazing experience to work inside a maximum-security centre, an opportunity I would not have been given without the traineeship.
I have recently started my third and final rotation with Transport for NSW (Regional Project Delivery team) in the Grafton office, working on the Goonoo Goonoo Road (Tamworth) Duplication. So far, I have been given the task of identifying and locating underground utilities (Comms, Electrical, Water, Gas, and Sewer) and am currently working on a road sign register to determine which new signs are needed, what signs are no longer needed and existing signs that will need to be relocated. Transport has been a very welcoming and supportive organisation to work for.
Following the completion of my traineeship, I plan on continuing my career in the construction administration industry.
