AFL blind and wheelchair sessions

OLA were lucky enough to have the AFL blind and wheelchair team come and work with our Grade 3/4 students.  Here is what some of our students said:

Today we had the chance to have the blind and wheelchair AFL players from Hawthorn at our school. I learnt from the wheelchair players that to ‘kick’ you had to handball and to ‘handball’ you have to underarm throw to the other player. To tackle you have to hold the player for three seconds. We got to get in a wheelchair and ride around and ‘kick’ goals.  I felt sad when the wheelchair player told us how he got into a wheelchair. Now I know that if you have a disability you can still follow your dreams. I had a great time with the blind and wheelchair AFL from Hawthorn. I am grateful for their visit to our school.

The 3/4s were lucky enough to experience a workshop of blind & wheelchair AFL players. The wheelchair experience was very inspiring, Matt and Gerad told us about how they are disabled, Matt was in a motorbike crash and Gerad was born with spina bifida. They taught us how to steer and properly use a sports wheelchair, we got to race and play wheelchair AFL. I was inspired by how they could live normal lives and persevere, even in a wheelchair. It was a lovely experience.

This afternoon we were very lucky to experience and explore the blind and wheelchair AFL workshop. I feel really inspired.  I learned that you can do anything you put your mind to. I'm grateful that I got to meet such wonderful people.

Communicating with your child

We encourage you to start and finish each day with a simple check-in. These check-ins can be a regular part of each day.
