Aunty Kim Wandin

Kim Wandin is a Wurunderi Woirurrung woman living in Healesville, Yarra Valley. She was born in 1958 and is turning 64 this year. She is a well known 2D & 3D artist and makes baskets and eel traps out of reeds and fibre plants. Aunty Kim Wandin has partnered with fellow Palawa artist Amanda Wright and Kingston City Council to design the new public Indgenous mural which will be integrated  into the new Mentone Life Saving Club.

Amanda Wright

Amanda Wright is a 34 year old Palawa woman and a mother of four. She lives in Boronia and loves doing Aboriginal Art. After graduating high school, she received the degree of Fine Arts. She has come from a family of artists. Those who were artists are her mother, her maternal grandfather, her sister and her mother’s cousin. Amanda started painting at the age of four.

The Mural

Wandin and Wright are doing a painting/drawing mural at the Mentone Life Saving Club. They are calling it Rakali Wilam. A rakali is a water rat. Rakali also means playfulness and fun so all together it would represent having fun in the water.  It will be made from bronze and will show the rakali coming in and out of the water. The rakali also has an important role in our coastal landscapes as a predator.

The Mentone Life Saving Club project is expected to finish by Summer, which is perfect timing!
