Year 5 -Term 3 Overview

English 

Reading and Viewing 

Focus: A major reading focus for this term will be our participation in “The Battle of the Books”. This runs from the 25th of July and ends on October 14th. Students have registered on the Beanstack App and log their reading time and upload book reviews when they’ve completed a book. We will reinforce these text types through our reading program as we develop a range of comprehension strategies to discover the hidden treasures buried by authors encouraging us to dig deeper 

Writing 

Focus: Students will also continue to develop their literacy skills by writing information reports with direct links to our science unit. We will also be running weekly Big Write sessions on Wednesday with the topic for the Big Talk set every Tuesday. Please discuss the topic with your child each week. They can make notes and use them during the writing session. 

Speaking and Listening 

Focus: Students will continue to develop their speaking and listening skills by presenting their science report to the class. They will also be responsible for preparing and presenting their work in our weekly Literacy Circles to their small group. 

Mathematics 

Number and Algebra 

Focus: We will continue developing understanding and skills in, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. 

Measurement and Geometry 

Focus: We will be looking at patterns and sequences in these processes to help us understand the wonder of creation how God reflects his nature and character through patterns, sequences, and order around us. We will also be investigating maps and practicing measuring the volume and capacity of various 3D objects. 

Statistics and probability 

Focus:Our focus here will be on reading and interpreting data to make informed decisions. 

Humanities 

Science 

Topic: Civics and citizenship   

Throughout this unit students will explore the skills and values they need to become an active and informed Australian citizen.  Students will explore this through a number of different topics. These topics include; Exploring democracy in Australia, the Australian electoral process, how and who enforces the law in Australia, why and how people work in community groups, and International law and how it is regulated. 

Topic:  This term we are studying Light as part of our Physical Science Curriculum. As part of this unit students will choose a bioluminescent creature to study. They will create an information report about their chosen creature and prepare an oral presentation for the class. 

 

 

Music 

Art 

Focus: In Music this term we are continuing to explore melody through the use of the Ukuleles. We are learning various chords and progressing towards creating our own compositions.  Focus: Students will continue to explore artworks from different times and cultures. They will be inspired by Indigenous Art using white charcoal focusing on the art element Line. They will use ink and pastels to create a camouflaged animal art piece. 

Physical Education 

Health 

Focus:  In Term 3 students will participate in physical activities designed to enhance fitness and discuss the impact of regular participation on health and wellbeing. They will also participate positively in groups and teams by encouraging others and negotiating roles and responsibilities in various sports.  Focus: This term we will be exploring our third “Life Raft” with the focus on pursuing our personal best no matter who we work with. We will be looking at what it means to be responsible citizens in the classroom and how we can create a working environment that ensures each person can achieve their personal best. These concepts are explored through a range of games, strategies and discussions. 

Christian Life 

L.O.T.E 

Focus:  Throughout this unit students will explore big issues about life, share their own opinions, and investigate the bible for themselves. Students will be encouraged to discuss their thoughts through many peer and class discussions throughout this units topics. These topics include; Where does our world come from? Does God really care?, What is God really like?, and how God speaks to us and the relationship we have with him through the bible. 

 

 

Focus: Hindi 

Students have selected ‘Minecraft’ as their topic and are thrilled to explore and interact about the same, in Hindi! Using Minecraft Indian landmarks as centre points, they will create simple imaginative texts, such as dialogues, storyboards, skits and songs that encourage exploration and enjoyment of the Hindi language. Students will continue to work on the sounds and patterns of pronunciation and elements of the Devanagari script. Students will also be perfecting their Hindi writing skills by writing words in Devanagari. 

Focus: French 

In Term 3 students will learn language to support conversations about families. Using ‘Ça, c'est ma famille’ students talk about their families, ages within their families, and expressions of possession. They will discuss types of family in France, French family documents and the origins of French names. Students will also share likes and dislikes in French. 

Discovery Learning 

Digital Technologies 

Focus:  Students take library books home every week.  

Please remember to pack your child’s satchel. 

 

Focus: Our focus this term is on coding using Lego Spike. Students work in groups to build a robot and create code so that it performs a specific job. So far, we have made hopping grasshoppers and a cleaning robot and written code for them. 

 

STEAM Teams 

Homework Expectations 

Focus: Students engage with ideas beyond the familiar, exploring how design and technologies and the people working in a range of technologies contexts contribute to society. They seek to explore innovation and establish their own design capabilities. Students are given new opportunities for clarifying their thinking, creativity, analysis, problem-solving and decision-making. Students will do this through either designing and creating billy carts or planting and growing vegetables to go in a soup they design. 

Homework is set on the first day of each month. It is posted on Teams and a hard copy is handed out to students. There are a number of different activities aimed at reinforcing the skills we are focussing on in class. Students can complete as many or as few of these tasks and hand them in on teams or in person.
