Year 4 -Term 3 Overview

English 

Reading and Viewing: Building Inferencing and Comprehension. 

Focus:  

Students will be using comprehension strategies to build literal and inferred meaning to expand content knowledge, integrating and linking ideas and analysing and evaluating texts. They will be looking at many examples of narratives, information reports, procedures and persuasive texts. 

Writing: Narrative with a message 

Focus:  

Students will be focusing on Grammar in which they will focus on nouns, verbs, adjectives and punctuation.  In Writing, children will be writing narratives with a message and as well as procedural text. There will be a major focus on Editing our own writing this Semester. 

Speaking and Listening: 

Focus:   

Understand differences between the language of opinion and feeling and the language of factual reporting or recording.  

Mathematics 

Number and Algebra: 

Focus: Students will be looking at Fractions and decimals, Money and financial mathematics and Patterns and Algebra this Semester. 

Measurement and Geometry: 

Focus: Students will be looking at Measurement, Shape and Geometry this Semester. 

Statistics and probability: 

Focus: Students will be looking specifically at the Commonwealth Games with a focus of Data Collection and Interpretation, using Excel and written tables for collection and sorting their data.  

 

Humanities 

Science 

Topic: Students will be looking at the many Countries/Places of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout Australia, and the custodial responsibility they have for Country/Place, and how this influences views about sustainability. Specifically look at the Bunurong and Wadawurrung People local to the Wyndham Vale area.  

 

 

Topic: Students are learning about how Forces can be exerted by one object on another through direct contact or from a distance. They will be looking at the different contact and non-contact forces, magnetic forces and how friction affects the forces on objects in this unit.  

They will be continuing to write Hypothesis, conduct experiments and reflect and draw conclusions on their findings throughout this Semester. 

Music 

Art 

Focus:  We are continuing to learn about melody through the use of our recorders. We are learning to read and follow notes on a treble clef stave and working towards the creation of our own melodic compositions. 

 

 

Focus:  Students will continue to explore artworks from different times and cultures. They will produce the following: Indigenous Art, Japanese printing and Chinese fans. With a focus on Winter, students will use charcoal to create a winter landscape. Students are learning to view, observe and discuss the artwork of Peter Diem’s Cow series to inspire their work. 

Physical Education 

Health 

Focus:  Students will practise and apply movement concepts and strategies in physical activities. They will also combine the elements of effort, space, time, objects and people when performing movement sequences in various sports.  

Focus: “Tools of Resilience” 

This Semester the grade fours are looking at adding Tools to their Kits to assist them in building resistance in their everyday life. 

 

Christian Life 

L.O.T.E 

Focus: Students will investigate how scripture can show us how to be contributing citizens to the community. Students will develop an understanding that truth finds its center in God, and God communicates truth to us through the Bible. In these studies students will learn about Christian values such as kindness and respect. 

Focus: French 

In Term 3 students develop active-listening and comprehension skills, using contextual, grammatical, phonic and non-verbal cues. The language they use contains familiar vocabulary and simple structures. Students make statements using the present tense and present + infinitive form about themselves and their families (Je suis australien; J’habite à Brisbane). Students gain an understanding that French and English have many similarities and some interesting differences. 

 

Focus: Hindi  

Students will create simple imaginative texts, such as dialogues, storyboards, skits and songs that encourage exploration and enjoyment of the Hindi language. They will collaboratively create an adaptation of the story ‘Jonah and the whale’ and present it as a skit. 

Students will continue to work on the sounds and patterns of pronunciation and elements of the Devanagari script. Students will also be perfecting their Hindi writing skills by writing words in Devanagari. 

Discovery Learning 

Focus:  Students take library books home every week.  

Please remember to pack your child’s satchel. 

 

Digital Technologies 

Focus: Students will be focusing on their touch-typing skills and becoming confident using word processing. Using Excel students will be learning how to create tables and input information collected into the tables and express the data into different graphs.

Students will be looking at what it means to work Collaboratively with their peers and their own strengths and weaknesses.  

They will be working through the design process when working in a team to create a Bridge; Reflecting, reviewing and building.

Students are expected to: 

Read 30mins each night. 

Write out their spelling words 3 times. 

Write ALL their spelling words into sentences. 

Write the dictionary meanings of 5 of their spelling words.
