August Careers News
Students and families often ask about where generalist degrees such as Arts, Science and Commerce might take them. I get questions such as “Does it lead anywhere?”; “What job will I get when I graduate?”; “I’ll just need to do more study at the end of it though won’t I?” In some cases, further study may be required, and many students will go on to post-graduate study to specialise in a particular area, however this doesn’t necessarily need to occur for a student to be employed at the end of their generalist degree. Additionally, in many cases, completing a double degree such as Science/Arts or Science/Commerce can lead to greater employment opportunities upon graduation. Find out more about the broad range of employment opportunities that generalist degrees can lead to by clicking the links below:
VTAC information
Students in year 12 are now busily opening up their VTAC accounts, and entering their preferences for 2023 tertiary study, and applying for SEAS and scholarships. Timely applications close on September 29th and SEAS applications close on October 7th. There are many helpful resources for Year 12 students and their families on the Firefly page here, and these are being updated regularly. Please ensure you pay the VTAC application fee of $44 by 29th September to avoid late payment charges.
Students and families in years 10-12 can find relevant VTAC guides for their year level on the VTAC website here. These guides can assist with subject selection and planning for tertiary education.
Early entry programs
Many universities, including Latrobe, ACU and Swinburne, offer early entry programs that Year 12 students can apply for throughout June-September (application period depends on the university). Applying for these courses means that students may receive an offer to a course based on their Year 11 results and co-curricular and community involvement prior to sitting exams in October/November, which can alleviate a lot of pressure. Information regarding early entry programs can be found on Firefly here.
