From the School Captains

Ted Lasso is a television show that caught our interest through quarantine about an American football coach who is hired to manage a British football (or soccer if you like) team, a sport which he has little to no experience in. Coach Ted Lasso owes his game successes to fully committing to and putting the needs of each team member first. He instils this into players by hanging a crooked sign above his office door with the word ‘BELIEVE’ to recognise that being part of a team relies on trusting in oneself and in each other. So, when elected to be School Captains this year, we instantly wanted to adopt the ‘Lasso Way’ by leading with empathy and relationship building.

Huntingtower is a team formed by the collaboration and commitment between students, teachers, families, and the wider community. It is the faith that we place in this team that allows Huntingtower to thrive. This is evident more than ever with the production last week. Our school community actively expressing their appreciation to the students and crew involved for the effort of putting on an amazing performance, by coming together to enjoy and support individuals pursuing what they love. The same can be said about the recent House Fundraisers, where you can see the compassion radiating from students’ and teachers’ smiles as they work together toward a bigger cause. “Without faith, it is impossible” (The Bible, Hebrews), and Huntingtower’s nurturing community so clearly demonstrates that we can believe in one another’s encouragement.

Another great idea which the show explores is the importance of having confidence and faith within your own actions. Those who have watched Season 1 will know the character of Nate, an initially timid kit manager who learns to trust in his football instincts, eventually being promoted to assistant coach of the club. Each and every person both within and outside the Huntingtower community is capable of unlimited potential and possesses immense talent. What often holds us back however, is self-doubt. This mental block we place on ourselves is a terrifying obstacle to overcome, but once we stop being our own worst enemy, we can all accomplish great things. Sometimes it can be helpful during stressful situations to take a step back and breathe. Positive reinforcement during reflection can help build determination and belief, and when we truly believe in our abilities, we will surprise ourselves with how much we can achieve.

Although we‘re not premier league football coaches, we still hope our words have left you with a sense of empowerment, both within yourself and others. As we approach the end of 2022, keep in mind that we ALL have unlimited potential both as individuals and as a community. And remember…
