Year 9 Pastoral Guardian

Teena Christofis

I would like to welcome all Year 9 students to Term 3. I hope that you have had a relaxing and rejuvenating break and managed to stay well. I also warmly welcome the following new Year 9 students and their families to Mount Alvernia College – Sophie Webster, Enrica Moschella and Ava Maloney.

Term 3 began with your attendance at an important SET planning meeting with your daughter and her Home Room teacher. This was a perfect opportunity not only to continue connection with her Home Room teacher but also for Year 9 students to start thinking about senior subjects and pathways post-school. A reminder, if you did not attend the Parent information session last term, the video recording of this is available through the links below and the College App. I hope you found these meetings as valuable as the staff did, and our thanks for making time in your busy schedule to attend.

The use of technology and social media has become an integral part of our daily lives due to online learning and an increase in communication via online platforms over the last few years. During a College assembly last term, Ms Jensen reminded students of the importance of positively managing their Digital Footprint. As you would be aware, a ‘digital footprint’ refers to information about you that exists on the internet as a result of your online activity. For the privacy and protection of all community members, you must not post photos of yourself or other students in school uniform or in the school setting. (Student Planner, page 20).

As I reminded students via a Teams message prior to the commencement of Term 3, they must check that their social media account settings are private and that they do not have any inappropriate images/videos contained in these accounts. Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, states,

“what kids do and post online, the sites they visit and the things they say are permanent. This digital footprint denotes their digital reputation and there is nothing to stop someone from saving and storing that information about your child.”

This is a particularly important learning for our students. As partners with parents/carers in educating our students, we refer you to the Digital Reputation edition on SchoolTV for relevant videos, articles, fact sheets and links to social media pages to assist you in discussing this with your daughter.  While you are on SchoolTV, I would also recommend the Positive Parenting edition, as another interesting read.

With camp fast approaching in Week 4 (Tuesday 2 – Friday August), my thanks to families that have completed the medical/dietary forms for the Year 9 Outdoor Education Experience prior to the due date. If you are yet to complete this, please do so as soon as possible, to allow for preparation to be completed. You can complete the forms through this link.

I encourage you to contact me at the College on 3357 6000 or via email at chrit@staff.mta.qld.edu.au if you would like to inform me about your daughter’s achievements or if you have any questions or concerns.
