Chess

I am delighted to inform the St Patrick’s College community that Patrick Udovicic, Anthony Karnaout (both Year 10) and Michael De Meio (Year 11) represented the College at last Sunday’s Secondary Schools One-Day Chess Tournament at North Sydney Boys. It would be remiss of me not to take this opportunity to thank both Ms Vinski and Mr De Meio who took on supervision duties and provided the following overview of the boys’ performance.

SPC started as the lowest ranked team, on the last table (Table 8).  By Round 5, the team had moved to Table 1, beating the highest ranked team (Sydney Grammar A) 2-1. This placed them equal first on 12 points heading into the final round with Sydney Grammar A and Knox Grammar A.

The final round saw the boys pitted against Knox A on Table 1. Earlier success in the day may have worked against the boys as they appeared to lose concentration a little and eventually went down 2-1. As a result, this placed Knox A in first position with two other teams, Sydney Grammar A and Sydney Boys, with St Patrick’s in equal second position.

This forced the organisers to go to a tie-break based on a count back, which resulted in Sydney Grammar A finishing second, Sydney Boys High School third and St Patrick’s College fourth in the Senior Division. Had the boys been ranked higher from the start, they may have been better placed. However, the strong performance shook the top of the tree with one State Champion exclaiming, "I did not realise that St Patrick’s were so good!".

The boys received a book for the school library for placing fourth overall.

Congratulations to the above-mentioned students and Ms Bakija for a wonderful achievement and for all the great work they have done to raise the profile of Chess at the College.

Senior School Winter Sport Photos

Parents and carers are advised that the Senior School Winter Sports photos will be taken on Thursday 15 September in the College Hall. Boys will be informed of the photo timetable via their Homeroom Noticeboards.

I would kindly ask that parents/carers ensure that their son’s Winter Sports gear is clean and in good condition for the photos. Details relating to the purchasing of photos online will be forwarded to parents/carers via the Especean soon. Please note that under no circumstance are boys to borrow gear from other boys if they have forgotten their own playing uniform. Boys will simply not take part in the photo if they have forgotten their gear. Parents/carers are advised that they will not be allowed to leave sports uniforms at Reception in the event their son forgets his gear.

Driver Needed

The College is seeking a suitably qualified driver who could assist with the transportation of the College’s sporting teams to training sessions offsite of an afternoon. Suitable applicants should have the correct licence (Light Rigid) that would enable them to drive both the 24-seater and 14-seater mini-buses along with a current Working With Children Clearance number.

Interested parties should forward their expression of interest to Mr Calavassy and me via email by 3:00 PM Friday 23 September:  anthony.clavassy@spc.nsw.edu.au and  steven.fochesato@spc.nsw.edu.au.
