Welcome back to the SAKG Kitchen/Garden in Term 3! We hope you had a restful and relaxing holiday.

We thrive in a team culture at Kingswood Primary School. I would like to say a huge thank you to the families of Lucas 4D, Boaz 3C and Nurit 1H for taking care of our hens over the holidays.

We were welcomed back in the garden with some giant broccoli. They were nearly 4 times the size of a normal head of broccoli and were delicious! We are growing pak choy, beetroot, cauliflower and cabbage. We are also having another go at silver beet, peas and lettuce.

The year 4's are returning to the SAKG program this term. A massive pile of leaves were left for us over the holidays and with our compost bins full, the leaves had to be moved! Students had to use the Habit of Mind of persistence to move the leaves which were not easy to pick up with a spade.

Another group of year 4’s had the pleasure of clearing the garden bed near the water tanks. Without any instructions the group was able to problem solve and work together to remove a bush and clear the bed.

I was extremely impressed with the work ethic and persistence of the year 4’s.

Working in the garden also gives students the opportunity to learn they can do hard things and things they don’t always want to do.

Our Grade 6’s this week had some difficult jobs to complete – they needed to weed, move boggy soil and clear the pumpkin patch vines that had begun to die back. The garden belongs to the students, and despite some hesitations, they were able to rise to the challenge and get the jobs done.

Happy Gardening Kingswood!
