EXTRACTING DNA FROM STRAWBERRIES

In Year 10 Biology, we are studying genetics and students participated in an experiment where we examined the DNA of a strawberry. Strawberries are not only delicious, but they are octoploid. This means they have eight sets of DNA chromosomes whereas humans only have two. The more chromosomes the higher the likelihood of finding DNA.

In our prac, each student collected two strawberry pieces and sealed them into a plastic bag. We then squashed the strawberries to make a puree which gave more surface area. Salt, soap and alcohol were added to the mixture, opening up cells and allowing us to access the DNA. We then filtered our mixture into a test tube whilst we watched and waited for several minutes. Eventually, the DNA rose to the surface of the test tube, creating a clear, thick and sticky substance.

Overall, it was wonderful to discover something new about a simple fruit that millions of people consume every day
