USING GAMES TO INTRODUCE PROBABILITY
Mr Killeen introduced probability to the class by having them play a game called Greedy Pig.
Greedy Pig works by making everyone start by standing up. A six-sided die is rolled, and that number is added to your score.
After each roll, you can sit down and keep your points, or you can stay standing and risk your points to gain more. If the number one is rolled, you lose all of your points. The person with the highest score at the end of the game is the winner.
Greedy Pig reinforces the concepts of chance, risk versus reward, independent outcomes, and even allows us to practise our mental arithmetic skills.
We played five games, and eventually Isaac Centra (Year 10) was crowned the winner.
It was a fun way to spend a Friday afternoon and my classmates said it was one of their best high school moments!
