Classroom Reports
Foundation & One
Welcome back to Semester Two. This term we have Mrs Carrol (Student Teacher) teaching us a unit on multiplication and division. So far, we have been busy recognising and making equal and unequal groups, and how many objects are in each group. We are very good at recognising an equal and unequal share! The Grade Fours, who joined us for a division game, were very impressed!
In Inquiry, our chemical science unit is called 'Spot the Difference' where we are learning how everyday materials can be changed in a variety of ways. When presented with a mystery object we used all the clues to discover it was an icy pole before it changed.
REMINDER:
- come dressed in your house colours to the sports on Friday (Go Jacka)
- book a time on Compass for Learning Conversations
- Listen to you child read each night
Mrs Chalmers, Classroom Teacher.
Years 1 & 2
Great to see everyone back from holidays!
This term in Inquiry we are becoming chemical scientists and will look at mixtures and how they can be used. We will investigate if the mixtures can be separated once they are mixed. Sounds like a lot of mixing!
In reading we are becoming detectives! Sometimes authors don’t tell us everything but they leave clues. We know this is called inferring and we will be ‘reading between the lines’ to find out what the author was meaning
In maths we are skip counting by 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s and working on repeated addition.
We are looking forward to seeing you at the Learning Conversations next week.
Appointments can be made on Compass.
Just a reminder to make sure your child has a named jumper on these cold days. There are a lot of jumpers without names

Year 4
What a start we have had to Term 3!
We have enjoyed getting back into the swing of learning and started to explore our Inquiry topic of Space and the Solar System - learning about all the amazing planets and things that we can find in our solar system.
Last week we explored ‘sharing between’ with the Foundation/1 class by playing mathematics games and then taught each other how to play Uno. It was great to see how engaged the Foundation/1 students were in learning new games with us.
We look forward to supporting our house teams at the Athletics on Friday as well as catching up for Learning Conversations next week.
Year 4 students are reminded to complete set homework tasks and continue reading at home to help improve their knowledge.
Miss Anderson, Classroom Teacher.
Year 5/6
We’re back! What a start to Term 3! We couldn’t have asked for better weather, with a top temperature of 17 degrees and sunshine each day! This made for perfect conditions for us to explore Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale, including the piers, lighthouses, beaches and towns.
Students were treated to delicious meals each day including pasta and meatballs, chicken schnitzels, chocolate mousse and countless milos.
A highlight activity was the afternoon spent Boogie Boarding. The camp instructors said if we could last an hour in the water, we were doing well…. In true Wedderburn style, we had to drag everyone out of the water as students were too busy giving their best effort to catch the perfect wave into the shore.
The nights saw us begin to wind down for the night but still with great activities planned including Minute to win it games, a trip to the Geelong Movies to see Elemental and a Dance Party.
Students represented Wedderburn College exceptionally well and adjusted to the 3 nights away from home incredibly well. All should be very proud of themselves.
A big thank you to Cottage by the Sea. It was such a well thought out and planned camp that our students loved. We will definitely be heading back in the future. When we arrived, each student was greeted on their bed by a handknitted teddy, booties, scarf and beanie, a lovely touch after a very long bus ride! Each student also came home with a bag of goodies from the camp, ranging from clothes, shoes, toys to stationary.
A huge thank you to Mrs Turnbull, Miss Douglas, Mr Merritt and Melinda who all gave up their time and attended camp. It wasn’t possible without you!
Miss Douglas, Classroom Teacher
Year 7 & 8 Food Tech
At the end of last term, Year 7 and Year 8 students designed their own pizzas. Year 8 actually made their own pizza dough from scratch, with yeast to make it rise, which was something new for some students. They then selected their favourite toppings to complete their pizzas.
Year 7 students used pre-made pizza bases but absolutely went to town with their designs. Violet’s pizza in the shape of a fish was a standout design with the yummy toppings of mushroom, Fetta cheese and spinach and capsicum to make the fish scales. Yr 7 and their creations are shown in the photos below.
Earlier in the Semester, Year 8 cooked an array of International dishes which included Ethiopian Spiced Chicken, Cauliflower Dahl, Kebabs and Greek Salad and Fajitas. Year 7 concentrated on learning basic skills by cooking Pizza Scrolls, Chicken Melts, Pancakes and Gooey Brownies, amongst other things.
Most students seemed to enjoy their Food Technology lessons and there was always a good level of engagement in the kitchen. Well done for a good effort in Semester 1 everyone.

Year 9 Duke of Ed
My D.O.E Major Jorja Thomas
As you all may know the year 9’s are working hard on their Duke of Ed Bronze Award. For my major component, my goal this year is to become better at creating special effects using makeup and other special effects products, I would like to get better at creating realistic cuts, bruises, and details that make the viewer emotionally react.
Over the last few weeks during Term 2, I started doing more hands-on experiments with my special effects makeup. The first time I did a hands-on design, I used Ms Herrington as a test dummy for the products, at that time we were working with face paint, this worked well.
I started with laying a base coat of moisturiser because it helps the paint blend into the skin making it seem more realistic, then I went on with putting each colour on the skin randomly, just trying to make it look right. After a few times doing the wrong thing I finally got to a stage where it looked really real.
After that I kept looking into different types of products I can use to make it better each time I try. I then found out that using PVA glue and tissue paper helps make it look like it’s peeling or the skin has been burnt.
The next person I used as a test dummy was Miss Van De Wetering. With Miss Van De Wetering instead of doing the design on her arm, I changed places to see how different the design would be, so I chose to use her hand. Using her hand as the canvas worked a lot better than I thought, because the skin of the hand is thinner then an arm, it made it blend in a lot better.
Year 10
Year 10 Work Experience:
During the last week of Term 2, all Year 10 students had the opportunity to undertake a week of work experience at various businesses across Victoria. Excitingly, students undertook their work experience across a range of career types and fields:
Amelia: Bridgewater Primary School, Bridgewater
Kalais: Inglewood District Health Services, Inglewood
Charlotte: Gregory’s Fitness Centre, Drouin
Blake: Peninsula Property Services, Wedderburn
Beau: Torney’s Fighting Fit, St Arnaud
Trav: Hoffman’s Engineering, Bendigo
Charlee: OHSC Wedderburn College
Libby: Inglewood Primary School
Scott: Holmes Brown Floor and Window Coverings, Charlton
Sianna: St Mary’s Primary School, Inglewood
Lillian: Science Gallery, Melbourne University
Ella: St Arnaud Early Learning Centre
Danny: Swipe Pest Control
Year 10s took part in daily activities in their chosen field including care and support of day care and primary school students, daily organisation and management of clients and specific workplace safety training. Students were able to experience a full week in their workplace, speak with customers, clean and lay flooring, weld, work with small groups of students, pitch ideas on projects, check bait stations and support the quoting of maintenance and repairs.
It was fantastic to see our students out in both our local and wider community representing the college! Feedback from our work experience employers has been very positive, with many glowing reports from both employers and students.
A big thank you to Sianna, Lillian, Ella and Libby who wrote and delivered a informative report at our recent whole school assembly.
Keep up the great work, Year 10s!
Mrs Barker, Mr Iser and Mr Merrit, Year 10 Homeroom Teachers
Year 11 & 12
Last Tuesday in Huddle, some of the Year 11 students were introduced to Wedderburn College’s Instructional Model through a team activity where they were required to construct a catapult using icy pole sticks and rubber bands. To achieve the task, the catapult had to launch a Mentos across the room.
Typically, the boys and girls formed separate groups for the task and, while learning about the parts of a lesson, the students accepted the challenge, demonstrating the ‘A’ in our
L E A R N acronym. ‘A’ stands for Active Learning, a crucial part of each lesson here at Wedderburn College. The students worked diligently and really embraced the team-work idea. They communicated clearly with each other and experimented with different ideas and techniques. Once ready, they held a competition to decide which catapult was the best. Both groups achieved the task, and all students learnt something about the Instructional Model, working as a team and the physics of a catapult.
