Term 3, Week 2
Welcome back for Term Three!
This term we have many events happening, so make sure to check Compass regularly for details, updates and permissions.
For Reading the students will continue to establish and work towards their reading goals set during conferences. The students have choice and agency in the texts that they choose to read and in the ways they demonstrate their comprehension. Their weekly Literature Circles Homework continues to be an expectation for our students. This term the students will also be reading and viewing a range of poetry texts centred around our topic of sustainability.
In Writing students will continue to follow the writing process working towards developing their writing skills. independently to develop their chosen writing ideas and a variety of text types. They are supported to set goals and evaluate their writing through regular teacher conferences.
In Maths, we started the term off with number – order of operations (BODMAS), multiplication and division. Week 2 and 3 we are learning about area and perimeter.
In the upcoming weeks we will continue to explore multiplication and division using mental and written strategies. This can take a lot of practise, but we are looking forward to exploring this through games, investigations and activities. As the term progresses we will move on to Fractions, Decimals and Percentages, so get those measuring cups, aprons and mixing bowls out ready to make equivalent fractions, compare the size of different fractions and add and subtract fractions.
Our Inquiry unit for Term 3 is ‘Sustainable Building’ where students will learn about energy, climate, electrical circuits, and sustainable practices. This fun, hands-on unit will culminate with a group project designing and building their own sustainable building. A great tip is to start bringing in cardboard boxes, small containers and other reusable materials for when the building starts.
