Chess Victoria Zonal Tournament

This week our chess teams once again played in a very strong Chess Victoria zonal tournament at Balwyn High. Some of the strongest teams in Victoria participated, including Brighton Grammar, Balwyn High, Glen Waverley, McKinnon, Carey, Kew, Elwood and St Catherine’s. We finished in joint first place with Balwyn on 25 points, but placed second on countback, a great result, nonetheless.

Our best player was Benny C on 6/7 points, however, the best news of the day was finding out the tournament was won by Angela F of St Catherines. This is the first time in the history (20+ years) of Chess Victoria high school tournaments that a tournament has been won by a girl, a wonderful result.

A pleasant surprise was bumping into Craig Jones (Class of 2014). Craig was Huntingtower Chess Captain in 2014, and is now a Maths teacher and chess coach at Balwyn High.

Well done to Jason who won 1st place and was crowned World Fitness Federation (WFF) Teenage Champion, in a body building competition earlier this month. He prepared for over 6 months. Huge congratulations!
