Welcome to Term 3 at OSHC

Hello, my name is Ebony and I am an educator at Ivanhoe Primary School OSHC.
During the first week of term students enjoyed many activities that promoted mindfulness and child initiated play. For example, students participated in an activity that involved working in pairs to create a "Buddy Balloon". This activity allowed students to create a stress ball and decorate it with a friend. (No balloons were left outside)
Additionally, during this week students also engaged in a painting activity that used resources from the garden. This activity allowed students to explore the concept of sustainability by using natural materials such as rocks and leaves.
Furthermore, students developed their teamwork skills by working together in many sporting activities such as basketball and soccer. Lastly, students improved their investigation skills by designing a parachute. This activity increased collaboration amongst the students while providing them with a chance to create their own designed solutions.
Thanks Ebony!
Lexi here, I'm the Outside School hours Coordinator if I haven't met you yet.
Hey Ebony, the children made some amazing creations!
Ebony is also studying to be a primary school teacher. Ebony sets up many different types of activities, I think she loves basketball the best? Ebony is great at helping children set up individual projects and listens to what they are interested in doing.
Sending a big warm welcome back to OSHC Families for Term 3 everyone! We hope you had a great break. Sending empathy to those who still had to work! No bills this week! Direct debit is on Wednesday 19th next week!
Warning...The following is a fictional story.
As you know, the OSHC building is at the very bottom of the school, far, far away from all the other buildings, so far, that sometimes we joke about how we teach 're-mote learning' also re-moat... learning, get it?
So like a 'Moat' - (a deep, wide ditch with a 'Sometimes river' surrounding a castle)
So I'm just going to come out and say it, we need a plan!
Non-fiction bit now.
Would you like to be part of a sustainability, environmental action group? You do! Great!
Do you have some spare time, not too much but just enough to help brainstorm how we can make 'Outside School Hours Care Building Entrance' look Fabulous for this years Fair?
Well please come and sign up to our Sustainability Action Group, contribute ideas and then help come up with a plan or many and help Lexi.
So far, I have some basic ideas, well, one idea.
Maybe hay bales for folks to sit on at the Fair, we could put picnic blankets on them then afterwards the whole school can use them for the various veggie gardens around the school. Hay bales can also soak up water! (I know genius!)
I had thought that maybe potato hessian sacks to grow plants in would be good.
If you don't know, along side the OSHC building where the storm water drain is, the storm water has quite a bit of run off.
I had also thought maybe some hay underneath growing plants to help stop erosion. As well as water the plants!
Am I clutching at straws? Is there anyone out there that has any solutions that I could put into a proper application for a grant from Banyule Council?
Mostly I am trying to teach children and folks at OSHC how to recycle, up-cycle use what we have already. Like what if our run off top soil could be recycled into a cool bike track for bike ED?
Anyhow, please drop me any ideas you might have in an email to: iposhc@ivanhoeps.vic.gov.au or if you have time during school hours I'm here 9-11am, call 94995226 or if you just want to chat at the gate or office, come and see me. For now I might buy a bale of hay or two and experiment!
Bye! Have a great week! Week/end.
